ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team saw its 11-match winning streak come to an end today, March 10, with a 4-3 setback to the Chattanooga Lady Mocs in Southern Conference action at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Elon, ranked 59th in the nation, drops to 11-2 (1-1 SoCon) with the setback, while UTC improves to 10-2 (2-2 SoCon).
The Lady Mocs took four out of six singles matches to earn the win and hand Elon its first loss since Jan. 23.
The maroon and gold started off strong, winning all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. Jordan Johnson and
Frida Jansaker improved to 12-1 on the year and won their ninth straight match with an 8-1 decision at No. 1 over Kayla Jones and Kelsey Coots.
Viviana Stavreva and
Maria Camara Ruiz were victorious at No. 2 doubles, topping UTC’s Kaylene Chadwell and Jenna Nurik, 8-4. At No. 3,
Briana Berne and
Taylor Casey recorded an 8-5 decision against Alexa Flynn and Claire Mulyadi.
Bryn Khoury earned a hard-fought win for the Phoenix at No. 4 singles, defeating Flynn in three sets, 6-0, 6-7, 6-4. Khoury improves to 12-3 on the year with the win.
At No. 6, Camara Ruiz came away with her seventh win of the season, defeating Mulyadi in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Elon returns to action at home on March 14 against local rival UNCG.
