CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team won its second Southern Conference match of the year in impressive fashion on Saturday, March 16, with a 7-0 sweep at Western Carolina. Elon, ranked 73rd in the nation, improves to 12-3 (2-2 SoCon) with the victory.
Jordan Johnston was victorious for Elon at No. 1 singles, topping Stacia Kissell in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. As a tandem with
Frida Jansaker, Johnston won, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles versus Kissell and Shannon Bettiol. Johnston and Jansaker improve to 13-2 on the year with the win.
Bryn Khoury stepped in at the No. 2 position and performed well for the maroon and gold, claiming a 6-2, 6-3, win against Sara Ruiz Pajares. Khoury leads Elon with 14 wins in singles play so far this season.
Maria Camara Ruiz improved to 9-2 on the year, as the sophomore defeated Nicole Nielly, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 3 singles.
At No. 4,
Barbora Lazarova topped Western Carolina’s Bettiol in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Lazarova improves to 10-7 on the year with the victory.
Briana Berne won her seventh straight match, as the senior defeated WCU’s Erin Maguire, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5.
Rookie
Caroline Baker won for the Phoenix at No. 6 to help secure the sweep.
Elon returns to action at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Wednesday, March 20, against Davidson at 4 p.m.
