ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team won in impressive fashion on Wednesday, March 20, as the Phoenix registered a 7-0 decision over the visiting Davidson Wildcats at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Elon improves to 13-3 (3-2 Southern Conference) with the victory, while Davidson falls to 7-4 (0-2 Southern Conference) with the setback.
The Phoenix won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead against the Wildcats.
Briana Berne and
Taylor Casey were the first to finish, as the duo claimed an 8-1 win against Catherine Wood and Frizzi Bschorer at No. 3.
Jordan Johnston and
Frida Jansaker clinched the point at No. 1, as Elon’s top duo registered an 8-6 win against Brites Moniz-Soares and Elaina Cummer.
Barbora Lazarova helped Elon jump out to a 2-0 advantage after the sophomore claimed a 6-1, 6-3, win over Catherine Wood at No. 5 singles. Maria Camara Ruiz extended that lead shortly thereafter after claiming a 6-2, 6-2, win at No. 6 versus Bschorer.
Viviana Stavreva was the next to finish for the maroon and gold, topping Stephani Synn at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Jansaker extended Elon’s lead to 5-0 shortly after with a 6-1, 6-4, decision against Cummer at No. 2 singles.
Johnston pushed Elon out to a 6-0 advantage at No. 1 singles, as the junior recorded a 6-2, 7-5, victory over Moniz-Soares. Classmate
Bryn Khoury put the finishing touches on the sweep after that, topping Nisha Crouser in three sets.
The Phoenix returns to action on March 25 at Georgia Southern.
