STATESBORO, Ga. – The Elon University women’s tennis team won its third straight match on Monday, March 25, after claiming a 5-2 decision at Georgia Southern at the Hanner Tennis Complex. Elon improves to 14-3 (4-2 Southern Conference) with the win.
Elon claimed a 1-0 lead after taking two out of three doubles matches to win the first point.
Jordan Johnston and
Frida Jansaker improved to 15-2 on the year with an 8-2 decision at No. 1 versus Paola Garrido and M. Phillips Smith. Later,
Briana Berne and
Taylor Casey battled GSU’s Jordana Klein and Caitlin Kitchen to a 9-7 win at No. 3 to clinch the point for the Phoenix.
Maria Camara Ruiz helped Elon jump out to a 2-0 advantage at No. 6 singles, defeating GSU’s Kitchen in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Camara Ruiz has won five straight and improves to 11-2 on the year with the victory.
Barbora Lazarova extended Elon’s lead to 3-0 at No. 5 singles, as the sophomore recorded a 6-1, 6-2, decision versus Natalie Maffett. With the win, Lazarova improves to 12-7 on the year.
Viviana Stavreva clinched the win for the maroon and gold at No. 3 singles, defeating Stephanie Woods, 7-5, 6-0, to give the Phoenix a 4-0 edge. Stavreva improves to 10-6 with the decision.
Jansaker helped give Elon a 5-0 lead at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-4, decision against Klein. Jansaker improves to 15-3 with the victory.
The Lady Eagles won the next two points to limit the damage, but it was too late.
The Phoenix returns to action on Wednesday, March 27, at College of Charleston.
