ELON, N.C. -- The 59th-ranked Elon women's tennis team extended its winning streak to 11 matches by opening Southern Conference play with a dominant 6-1 victory over the Samford Bulldogs from the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Saturday.
The Phoenix (11-1, 1-0 SoCon) grabbed victories at the top two doubles positions to earn the first point of the match. At number one, Elon's
Jordan Johnston and
Frida Jansaker teamed up for an 8-5 victory over Samford's Kristin Lewis and Stepanie N'tcha. The maroon and gold's duo of
Maria Camara Ruiz and
Viviana Stavreva also claimed an 8-5 decision at number two. They dispatched Samford's Carita Moolman and Adri Lochner.
The Bulldogs (6-6, 1-2) pair of Jessica Northcutt and Emily Mallory earned an 8-6 win over Elon's
Briana Berne and
Taylor Casey at number three.
Elon's top five also picked up singles victories - all in straight sets. It started at number one where Johnston knocked off Lewis 6-2, 7-5. Jansaker earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over N'tcha at number two, while Stavreva's 7-5, 6-4 win over Northcutt gave Elon the win at number three.
Bryn Khoury's 7-6, 7-6 win over Moolman at number four was the closest of the straight-set wins. Finally,
Barbora Lazarova was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Mallory at number five.
Samford's lone point of the match came at number six singles where AnnMarie Lyon defeated Elon's Ruiz 1-6, 7-6, 6-4.
Elon will be right back on the courts on Sunday as the Phoenix hosts the Chattanooga Mocs in a 1 p.m. match at the Powell Tennis Center.
