ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team closed out its Southern Conference regular season schedule with a 4-3 win over the visiting Appalachian State Mountaineers on Thursday, April 11, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Elon improves to 18-3 (8-2 SoCon) with the victory, its seventh straight, while ASU drops to 13-8 (5-4 SoCon).
The Phoenix quickly took the doubles point to take a 1-0 match lead.
Briana Berne and
Taylor Casey claimed an 8-1 decision at No. 3 versus ASU’s Brianna Armellino and Jessica Thaggard, while
Jordan Johnston and
Frida Jansaker won 8-1 against Ellie Linsell and Clare Cox to clinch it.
Viviana Stavreva and
Maria Camara Ruiz won for good measure at No. 2, topping ASU’s Gabriela Celi and Jennifer Ansari, 8-4, to complete the sweep.
Stavreva extended Elon’s lead to 2-0 at No. 3 singles after claiming a swift 6-1, 6-1, decision versus Appalachian State’s Brianna Armellino. Stavreva improves to 11-9 on the year with the win.
Jansaker pushed the Phoenix out to a 3-0 advantage at No. 2 singles after dispatching ASU’s Cox in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Jansaker improves to 19-3 on the year with the win.
Bryn Khoury clinched the match win for the Phoenix at No. 4 in impressive fashion, topping Ansari in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. Khoury trailed 3-0 in the second set, but came back strong to win it. Khoury improves to 19-4 on the year with the victory.
Elon closes out the regular season on Saturday at home against East Carolina. It marks the final home match for senior Briana Berne.
