Box Score STATESBORO, Ga. -- One big inning was the downfall of the Elon baseball team as the Phoenix dropped a 12-4 game at Georgia Southern on Saturday afternoon.
The Phoenix (22-23, 14-9 SoCon) was the first to strike, scoing two runs in the top of the second inning. With bases loaded and one out,
Sebastian Gomez picked up a RBI as he reached on a fielder's choice that left runners on the corners. That was followed by a
Niko Fraser single down the right field line that plated the second run.
Elon stretched is lead to 3-0 in the third when
Antonio Alvarez singled home
Joey Tomko.
Georgia Southern (23-19, 12-11) made it a one-run game in the last of the third thanks to a two-RBI single from Tyler Avera.
Elon pushed it back to a two-run lead when
Ryan Kinsella picked up his 60th RBI of the year on a single threw the left side of the infield.
The Eagles then struck big in the fourth. GSU loaded the bases with two singles and a hit batter before T.D. Davis gave his squad a 6-4 lead with a grand slam to left. The next hitter reached on an error and the Eagles went on to score another six runs in the frame to make it a 12-4 game.
Spencer Medick (5-4) took the loss after he gave up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in just 3.1 innings of work.
The win went to Sam Howard (6-6) who threw 4.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Elon's offense pounded out 14 hits, including a career-best four hits from Fraser. Kinsella, Tomko and
Tyler McVicar all added two-hit performances.
The Phoenix will look to claim the series finale on Sunday as the two teams will meet at 1:30 p.m.
