Box Score ELON, N.C. -- A day after earning a thrilling walk-off win, the Elon baseball team tried to do the same on Sunday, but came up just short in its ninth-inning rally as the Phoenix dropped a 6-4 contest to the visiting Samford Bulldogs on Senior Day at Latham Park.
Trailing 6-3 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, pinch-hitter
Danny Lynch sent a 2-2 pitch up the middle for a single. With two outs,
Casey Jones singled to center before pinch-hitter
Chris King, the hero on Saturday, doubled home Lynch on a liner to left-center. With the tying run now on second, Andres Gracia enduced a slow grounder to third to end the game and give Samford (26-26, 11-15 Southern Conference) its lone win in the three-game series and just its third victory over Elon (27-27, 18-11) since joining the SoCon for the 2009 season.
Samford moved in front for good thanks to a two-out, two-run homer from Christiaan Durdaller in the top of the seventh. That shot down the left field line broke a 3-3 tie.
Durdaller also got the Bulldogs on the board in the first, also with a two-run home run.
Elon grabbed a 3-2 lead in the last of the fourth despite getting only one hit in the frame.
Ryan Kinsella began it with a walk before an error and walk loaded the bases.
Alex Swim followed with a sacrifice fly to left to score Kinsella. The throw from left came in to an uncovered third base and went out of play, allowing Elon's second run to score and leaving a runner on third. A
Wil Leathers double scored the third Phoenix run of the inning.
Samford tied it in the fifth on a C.K. Irby single and added an insurance run on a Durdaller single in the top of the ninth.
Spencer Medick (6-6) went 6.2 innings and surrendered five runs on seven hits in the loss. He struck out six.
The win went to Cole Limbaugh (4-3) who came on in the fourth inning and gave up just one run on four hits in 5.1 innings. Gracia got the final out for his third save of the year.
Durdaller finished the day with three hits and five RBI for Samford.
For Elon, Kinsella's walk in the fourth extended his streak of reaching base safely to 31 straight games.
The Phoenix will now be off until the 2013 Southern Conference Tournament in Greenville, S.C., which gets underway on Wednesday, May 22. Elon is assured of a top-four seed in the upcoming league showcase.
