GREENSBORO, N.C. – Elon women's track and field freshman Caroline McCaslin wrapped her impressive frosh season after competing at the NCAA East Preliminaries on Friday night, May 24. McCaslin became the first Phoenix athlete to qualify the preliminary round since 2011 as she competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Belk Irwin Track.
 
“We’re so proud of all the accomplishments that Caroline has achieved this season,” said Phoenix head track and field coach Mark Elliston. “Coach (Christine) Engel has done a fantastic job with the distance group all season long and to have Caroline make it to the regional round is just a testament to both of their hard work.”
 
McCaslin ran a time of 11:07.26 in the race, becoming only the second distance runner in program history to compete in the preliminary round since Alana Black in 2006. The Prospect, Ky., native ends her freshman year with a laundry list of awards and individual accolades, including setting a new school-record in the event during the year and capturing the Southern Conference title at the league championship meet, earning All-SoCon honors. She also made the league's All-Freshman team in both the 3,000m steeplechase and the 1,500-meter run.
