Elon Drops Series Opener at Appalachian State

Box Score
BOONE, N.C. -- For just the fifth time since Elon joined the Southern Conference for the 2004 season, the Appalachian State baseball team knocked off the Phoenix as the Mountaineers handed the maroon and gold a 9-1 setback in the opener of a three-game set.

The game was scoreless until the last of the fourth inning when Appalachian State (25-17, 12-11 SoCon) got one run after loading the bases with no outs.  The Mountaineers started the inning with an infield single and two slow ground balls through the infield to load the bags for Dillon Dobson who grounded out to second to pick up the RBI.  After ASU reloaded the bags with a walk, Elon got out of the jam thanks to a force out at home and a grounder to second.

ASU added one in the fifth on the first of two sacrifice flies from Will Callaway on the day.

The Mountaineers then pushed across seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to complete their scoring efforts.

Elon (23-26, 15-10) finally broke through in the seventh.  Ryan Kinsella lined a single to center with one out to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 26 games.  He then went to third on a Niko Fraser double and scored on Antonio Alvarez's ground out.

Spencer Medick (5-5) took the defeat after surrendering seven runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings.  He struck out four.

The win went to Jamie Nunn (9-3) who allowed one run on five hits in 7.1 innings of work.

The two teams are scheduled to play game two of the series at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
