GREENVILLE, N.C. – Being forced indoors due to weather did not have an effect on the Elon University women's tennis team today, March 6, as the Phoenix won their sixth straight match by a score of 4-0 on the road against East Carolina at the ECU Indoor Facility.
"The team did a great job of adjusting to playing indoors today," said Elon head coach
Elizabeth Anderson. We played outstanding today, especially in doubles, and we're looking forward to getting back home next week against Gardner-Webb."
The Phoenix earned the doubles point in convincing fashion with wins on court Nos. 1 and 2.
Jordan Johnston and
Barbora Lazarova earned a 8-3 victory on court No. 1 to get Elon moving in the right direction. Then,
Frida Jansaker and
Maria Camara Ruiz finished off the point with a 8-2 win on court No. 2.
With three courts to play on, the Phoenix picked up quick wins on court Nos. 2 and 3 to jump ahead 3-0 before the second phase of singles matches was underway. Jansaker breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Maria Storozheva on court No. 2. She was followed just minutes later by Lazarova on court No. 3 when the junior beat Emily Groeneveld 6-1, 6-2.
Johnston finished the sweep for Elon with a 6-3, 6-4 win on court No. 1 against Michelle Castro. The win marks the fourth straight sweep for the Phoenix and fifth in their last six matches.
After its first match on the road since January 25, Elon comes home Tuesday, March 11, to face Gardner-Webb for a 2:30 p.m. match at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
