ATHENS, Ga. – The Elon University men's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to Michigan State in the consolation match of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kickoff Weekend Jan. 24 at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility in Athens, Ga.
 
The 55^th-ranked Phoenix lost its first match of the weekend to No. 60 Utah Jan. 23. 62^nd-ranked Michigan State garnered a spot in the consolation match after losing to the host and eighth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs Jan. 23.
 
The Spartans captured the doubles point with a pair of 6-4 victories on court Nos. 2 and 3. Michigan State's Michael Dube and Mac Roy beat the duo of Chris Humphreys and Jordan Kaufman, while Robert Lindgren and Juan Madrid faltered on court No. 3.
 
Stefan Fortmann and Brian Kowalski played a tight match at No. 1 doubles and finished in a 5-5 tie with Michigan State's Brett Forman and Gijs Linders.
 
Michigan State clinched the match with three straight singles victories. Harry Jadun gave the Spartans a 2-0 advantage with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Kowalski. Roy followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kaufman, and Forman finished things off by beating Lindgren, 6-4, 6-1.
 
Fortmann and Neal Port's singles matches went unfinished. Fortmann played a competitive match against the 76^th-ranked Linders but lost the set, 7-6, in a tiebreaker. Port led, 1-0, in the first set of his match at the end of play.
 
Elon falls to 0-4 with the loss. The Phoenix is next in action on the weekend of Feb. 7-8 when the team will travel to Virginia for a pair of matches against Old Dominion and Virginia Commonwealth.
