GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Elon University women's tennis team dropped its second match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend, falling to 61st-ranked Georgia State, 4-0, on Jan. 25 at Scott Linder Stadium in Gainesville, Fla. Elon moves to 1-3 on the year with the setback.
Georgia State took the first point in doubles play behind the No. 1 team of Tarani Kamoe and Linn Timmermann, ranked 40th in the nation, defeating
Maria Camara Ruiz and
Barbora Lazarova, 6-4. On court two, the duo of Niri Rasolomalala and Kristin Rehse overpowered
Olivia Lucas and
Taylor Casey, 6-3, to take the first point of the match for the Panthers. No. 3 doubles went unfinished between GSU's Masa Grgan and Veronika Golanova and Elon's
Kamilla Beisenova and
Erica Braschi.
In singles play, Georgia State continued with powerful play with three straight victories. At No. 1 singles, 102nd-ranked Niri Rasolomalala topped
Kirsten Ward, 6-3, 6-3.
At No. 3 singles, Kristin Rehse topped Elon's
Barbora Lazarova, 6-2, 6-2.
GSU clinched the match at No. 5 singles, as Chaimaa Roudami defeated
Kamilla Beisenova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
The following matches for the Phoenix went unfinished but were close ones for the women. In doubles play
Kirsten Ward and
Erica Braschi were holding their own against Masa Grgan and Veronika Golanova with a 6-5 score favoring Elon. In singles play the No. 2 match saw
Olivia Lucas falling in the first set, 6-7 and was up 4-1 when her match against 69
th nationally ranked Linn Timmermann was stopped.
Erica Braschi was leading in her second set against Georgia State's Masa Grgan up 5-3. In No. 6 play
Maria Camara Ruiz won her first set 6-3 against Marcia Tere-Apisah and was leading 4-3 in the second. These matches were all stopped and unfinished due to Georgia State clinching the match point in No. 5 singles play.
Elon looks to rebound in its next match on Feb. 7 at 3 p.m. at Wake Forest.
