Agate – N.C. A&TAgate – PresbyterianELON, N.C. – Josh Luck earned the first two wins of his collegiate career today, Feb. 14, helping the Elon University men's tennis team sweep its doubleheader against North Carolina A&T and Presbyterian at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Â
Luck picked up a win at No. 1 singles against N.C. A&T's Dre Jarmon in Elon's 6-1 win and clinched the match for the Phoenix with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 triumph at No. 4 singles against Presbyterian.
Â
"We're getting healthy, that's number one," Elon head coach
Michael Leonard said. "This is the first time we've probably played with a healthy lineup. I think some of our guys stepped up today in singles. It was good to get some of our guys that haven't played to play matches in the first match today."
Â
Elon got things started against the Aggies by winning on all three doubles courts. Carrying a 1-0 lead into singles competition, the Phoenix continued to control play, as
Neal Port and
Christopher Geaslen shut out their opponents in 6-0, 6-0 wins.
Â
The Phoenix carried that momentum into its next match against Presbyterian, winning on all six singles courts to win the match, 6-1.
Â
The Blue Hose took a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point, but Elon responded in singles play to sweep the doubleheader and win its third straight.
Â
Stefan Fortmann,
Robert Lindgren and
Jordan Kaufman each made quick work of their opponents at the top three singles positions, winning their matches in straight sets. Three-set wins by
Brian Kowalski and
Juan Madrid closed out the win for Elon.
Â
The Phoenix improves to 3-6 on the season with the win. The team is back in action next weekend, when Winthrop and UNC Wilmington travel to Elon Feb. 20 and 22, respectively.
