WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Elon University women's tennis program fell 7-0 to Wake Forest Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Leighton Tennis Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.
In doubles play, Olivia Lucas and Kirsten Ward lost a close match against Kasey Gardiner and Luisa Fernandez, 6-3. Wake Forest clinched the doubles point on court two with Barbora Lazarova and Maria Camara Ruiz falling 6-0. Taylor Casey and Erica Braschi went unfinished against Karen Forman and Xue Zhang, but were all even at four.Elon continued its hard fight against Wake Forest in singles play, with a couple of close matches. Both Braschi and Lucas took their matches to a tiebreaker round. Lucas was bested by Kimmy Guerin 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4). Braschi lost to Fernandez 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7). Lazarova had a close match with a decision of 6-4,6-2 against Samantha Asch. There were also two other matches with Elon scoring against Wake Forest – on court two Ward lost 6-4, 6-1, while Ruiz was defeated 6-1, 6-3.On the hard fought match Coach Elizabeth Anderson said, "I thought the team battled hard today and we were very competitive in many of the matches. Erica and Taylor were playing well and were in a very close doubles match when it was clinched. Olivia and Erica both pushed their opponents to a tiebreaker for the third set and showed a lot of heart."Elon stands at 1-4 on the season. The Phoenix will travel to Gardner-Webb Thursday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. --ELON--
