ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women's tennis team won its seventh match in its last eight tries following a 4-3 decision over visiting East Carolina on Wednesday, March 18, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Elon improves to 8-5 with the win, while ECU falls to 11-6 with the setback.

The Lady Pirates took a 1-0 advantage after doubles play following wins at No. 1 and No. 3. But the Phoenix responded in singles play, winning four of six matches to secure the home win.

"I am very proud of the team for coming together with a positive determination today," said Elon head coach
Elizabeth Anderson. "We started off slow in doubles and early on in singles, but pulled through and found a way to win."
Kirsten Ward clinched the match for the Phoenix in three sets, as the rookie topped Michelle Castro, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, to make it a 4-3 match. "Kirsten's positive focus really was key for us today," added Anderson. "She dictated the points the entire match and was very impressive today."
Erica Braschi was impressive as well, topping ECU's Sarah Sarjoo in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 4 singles."Erica competed really hard today and set up Kirsten well for a story-book finale," commented Anderson.Â
Taylor Casey got the momentum going for the Phoenix in singles, as the junior registered a 6-4, 7-5, win over ECU's Neena Wankg at No. 6.

"Taylor really got us going in singles and gave us the spark we needed," said Anderson.

Olivia Lucas rebounded at No. 1 singles for a three-set win, as the rookie dropped a 6-4 decision in the first set, but rallied back with 6-2, 6-0, wins in the second and third against ECU's Nicole LaDuca.

"Olivia fought back hard in the third set," commented Anderson. "Her relentlessness in the third set was particularly impressive today."

Elon returns home on Saturday, March 21, against James Madison.
