AgateSPARTANBURG, S.C. – Playing its second match in as many days, the Elon University men's tennis team fell by a margin of 4-3 today, March 25, to USC Upstate at the USC Upstate Tennis Center.
The Phoenix took a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point with victories on two of the three courts. Elon's top duo of
Brian Kowalski and
Stefan Fortmann improved to 9-1 in its last 10 matches by handling the Spartans' Jamie Yates and Ramon Simonetti, 8-5, while
Neal Port and
Chris Humphreys clinched the point with an 8-3 triumph on court No. 3.
Jordan Kaufman added a point for the Phoenix with a 5-7, 7-6, 6-2 victory against USC Upstate's Viktor Selander at No. 2 singles, his third straight win.
Port improved his singles record to 3-1 with a 5-7, 7-6, 7-6 triumph over the Spartans' Felix Ewers.
Fortmann had his five-match singles win streak snapped by Simonetti at No. 1 singles in a three-set loss. The senior hadn't lost since March 7 and is now 8-2 in his last 10 matches.
The Phoenix falls to 7-10 with the loss and returns to action April 2 at Davidson.
