Men’s Tennis Splits Doubleheader

Agate – NCCU
Agate – GSU

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men's tennis team cruised passed North Carolina Central to a 6-1 win but was slowed by Georgia Southern, 5-2, as the Phoenix split a doubleheader today, March 7, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Elon started the day with a victory against NCCU in the front end of the doubleheader. The Phoenix controlled the match from the outset, winning the doubles point and carrying that momentum into singles play.

Robert Lindgren and Juan Madrid played at the top doubles position for the Phoenix and defeated NCCU's Thomas Persico and Will East, 6-3. Dan Sablik and Christopher Geaslen trailed in their match at No. 3 doubles but rallied late to win 6-4 and clinch the point for the Phoenix.

Chris Humphreys and Jordan Kaufman trailed 5-4 at No. 2 doubles but didn't finish.

Brian Kowalski gave Elon a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Fabrice George. Lindgren and Fortmann followed by closing out their singles wins to clinch the match for the Phoenix.

Josh Luck added a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles, while Neal Port won 7-5, 6-0 on court No. 6. NCCU's only point came by way of a three-set victory on court No. 2, where Daniil Gerasimov topped Jordan Kaufman, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).

Elon faced former Southern Conference opponent Georgia Southern in its second match of the day.

The Phoenix played a tight doubles point against the Eagles but dropped the point after losing two of the three matches. Madrid and Lindgren fell on court No. 2 and the duo of Humphreys and Port fell short at No. 3 doubles.

Fortmann and Kowalski stretched their win streak to five matches with an 8-3 victory against GSU's Kyle Hoffman and Jose Landin.

GSU picked up singles wins on court Nos. 4, 5 and 6 to clinch the match. Humphreys lost a 6-2, 6-1 decision on No. 6, while Luck and Madrid lost three-set matches at No. 4 and 5 singles, respectively.

Lindgren made quick work of GSU's Jose Landin, winning a 6-2, 6-4 decision to add a point for the Phoenix. Kaufman made it 5-2 after outlasting Albert Codina Sala in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.

Elon's record stands at 4-8 after the split. The Phoenix will face Longwood on March 12, followed by Winthrop March 13 and George Washington March 15. All three matches will be played at the JPTC.
