LOOKING BACK: The Phoenix swept Towson, 4-0, in today's quarterfinal match of the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championships. Elon won a tight doubles point and took three singles matches to secure the win and advance to the semifinals.
Erica Braschi and
Taylor Casey prevailed in a tiebreaker to clinch the doubles point and win their eighth straight match. Braschi's singles victory gave Elon a 3-0 lead against the Tigers, while
Kirsten Ward and
Barbora Lazarova also added singles wins.
Elon won its first championship in program history last year by winning the Southern Conference Tournament. Elon looks to further dent the record books by winning back-to-back conference titles, which would also be a first for the program.
ELON vs. JMU: Tomorrow's meeting will be the second time the Phoenix and Cougars face each other on the tennis courts this season. The two schools played a competitive match on April 10, with College of Charleston rallying for a 4-3 win. Ward, Lucas and Lazarova each picked up singles wins for Elon in the loss.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS: College of Charleston earned the No. 2 seed in the CAA Tournament after a 12-12 mark in the regular season and used a 4-0 sweep of Drexel to advance to the semifinals.
The Cougars are led by head coach Angelo Anastopaulo, who was named CAA Women's Tennis Coach of the Year for 2015. Three College of Charleston players received postseason honors, as Samantha Maddox was named first-team All-CAA in singles and Jenny Falcone and Katherine Schofield were named first-team All-CAA in doubles. Falcone and Schofield, the 79
th-ranked duo in the nation, extended their winning streak to seven matches in the Cougars' quarterfinal win.
LOOKING AHEAD: A win tomorrow against the Cougars would send Elon to the championship match of the CAA Tournament on Sunday, April 19 at 10 a.m. The Phoenix would face either fifth-seeded James Madison or top-seeded William & Mary at the Millie West Tennis Facility.
