AgateDAVIDSON, N.C. – The Elon University men's tennis team played its third straight match decided by a margin of 4-3 today, April 2, at Davidson and improved its record to 2-1 in those matches by defeating the Wildcats at the Covington Tennis Courts.
The Phoenix played a pair of 4-3 matches in South Carolina last week, defeating College of Charleston on March 24 before falling to USC Upstate on March 25. The win marked Elon's 12
th straight against Davidson.
Victories on court Nos. 1 and 2 gave the Phoenix the doubles point and a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. Elon's top duo of
Stefan Fortmann and
Brian Kowalski defeated the Wildcats' Jack Riazzi and Evan Watkins, 8-5, while
Jordan Kaufman and
Robert Lindgren cruised past Jordan Hart and J.B. Gough by a margin of 8-4.
Chris Humphreys and
Neal Port were locked in a 5-5 tie at No. 3 doubles against Davidson's Artem Khrapko and David Hager, but went unfinished.
Elon and Davidson (12-8) split the six singles matches, as each team won three. Elon's trio of seniors – Fortmann, Kowalski and Kaufman – picked up wins to give the Phoenix the necessary four points to clinch the match.
Fortmann defeated Davidson's Shamael Chaudhry, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 1 singles, and Kowalski added a 6-1, 6-1 win against Ricky Saad. Kaufman, last week's recipient of the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week award, handled Gough, 7-5, 6-3, at the No. 2 position.
The win, Elon's third in its last four matches, improved the team's record to 8-10 on the season. The Phoenix plays his final home match of the season this Saturday, April 4, when the team hosts Charlotte for Senior Day. Each of Elon's six seniors will be recognized prior to the match, which is set to begin at 1 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
