ELON, N.C. – An individual victory by rookie
Nick Ciolkowski highlighted the season-opening meet for the Elon University cross country programs at its home meet, the Elon Open, on Friday, Sept. 4, at the Elon Cross Country Course.
Ciolkowski claimed the men's 6K race with a time of 18:33, just edging out Wake Forest's Simon Holden, an All-Atlantic Coast Conference performer in track last season. In the women's 4K race, the Phoenix's
Shelby Cuddeback was the runner-up after clocking a time of 14:48.
Sam Geha was the second Phoenix runner to cross the line on the men's side with a time of 18:50 and fifth overall followed by senior
Reed Payne at 19:11 and 11th.

th) rounded out the group for the Phoenix.
Following Cuddeback on the women's side for Elon was senior
Kaitlin Snapp, who was fifth overall with a time of 15:11. Rookie
Chelsea Smith was the next runner for the maroon and gold with her time of 15:16 in eighth followed by sophomore
Corey Weiss, who finished in the top 10 with a time of 15:28.
Alicia DeCastro (16:08) and
Carolyn Hopkins (17:02) closed out the women's side for Elon who competed without many of its returning runners from its top-seven of a year ago.
High Point won the men's team title with 28 total points followed by Wake Forest (46), Elon (56) and UNCG (100). The Demon Deacons won the women's title with 33 points while Elon (41), High Point (50) and UNCG (114) rounded out the scores.
The Phoenix is back in action next Saturday, Sept. 12, with its annual home meet, the Elon Invitational.
