WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Elon University women's track and field team resumed its indoor season on Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Wake Forest Invitational inside the JDL Fast Track Complex in the Phoenix's first meet of the 2016 calendar year.
Senior
Sydney Griffin turned in another school and personal-record performance in the women's 60-meter hurdles as the Marietta, Ga., native clocked a time of 8.49 in the final round. Griffin finished fourth overall in the race and bested her previous school and personal-best mark of 8.53 that she set in the Phoenix's season-opener at the JDL Kickoff Classic on Dec. 5.
Jen Esposito took home the event title in the 400-meter dash after clocking in a 56.17 in the race. Rookie
Lauren Brzozowski joined Esposito in the top-10 of the race with her time of 59.50 along with fellow frosh
Desiree Ross at 59.88.
Another school-record was set in the 600-meter run with senior
Samantha Brown crossing the line with a time of 1:40.10. Griffin was the maroon and gold's top finisher in the 200-meter dash with her time of 25.11, fifth overall.
The Phoenix's "A" 4x400-meter relay team of
Katie Arbogast, Ross, Brzozowski and Esposito was second overall in the race and first among collegiate teams. The quartet combined for a time of 3:54.91. – fourth-best indoor performance in school history.
In field events, the Phoenix's
Carrie Abraham had strong showings in the both the long and triple jump finishing fifth in both events. The Winchester, Mass., native had a leap of 17' 5.5" (5.32m) in the long jump and a mark of 37' 0.25" (11.28m) in the triple jump.
Rookie
Ellie Bennett had the third-best indoor mark in the pole vault as the Mountaintop, Pa., native cleared the bar at 10' 10" (3.30m).
Emily Dixon was fifth in the high jump with her cleared height of 5' 3" (1.60m).
Bre'anna Warren was Elon's top finisher in the shot put with her toss of 42' 6" (12.95m) and was sixth overall.
Briana O'Grady earned a top-10 standing in the weight throw after her heave of 43' 2.50" (13.17m).
The maroon and gold travels back to the JDL Fast Track Complex next Sunday, Jan. 24, for the UNCG Spartan Team Challenge.
