MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Elon University women's track and field team concluded its outdoor season-opening meet at the Shamrock Invitational on Saturday, March 19, at the Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
Senior
Sydney Griffin won the 100-meter hurdles as the Marietta, Ga., native clocked a 13.63 in the race, edging out Chalese Davis from South Carolina. In the 400-meter hurdles,
Jen Esposito was third in the event with her time of 58.28 – one of three times that broke the previous stadium and meet record in the race.
Lydia Laws also climbed into the program's top-five list in the 400-meter hurdles with her time of 1:02.28.
Freshman
Ellie Bennett won the pole vault for the Phoenix after she cleared the bar at 10' 6" (3.20m). That mark is now third-best in school history. Fellow rookie
Nicole Karabas was third in the event as she also cleared the bar at the same height, but needed more attempts to do so.
Esposito, Laws,
Desiree Ross and Lauren Brzozwski helped the Phoenix's 4x400-meter relay team clock a 3:52.30 in the race. That time is now fifth-best on the program's all-time performance list.
Laws was sixth in the long jump with her leap of 17' 1.50" (5.22m) while
Carrie Abraham was seventh in the triple jump with her leap of 39' 0.25" (11.89m).
Jayna Coyle broke in the program's top-five list in the triple jump with her jump of 37' 8" (11.48m).
Bryanna Hames was the runner-up in the discus throw with her heave of 153' 2" (46.70m) and was Elon's top finisher in the shot put with her mark of 41' 2.25" (12.55m).
The Phoenix will next compete at the Raleigh Relays on March 25-26.
