RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior
Jen Esposito's win in the 400-meter hurdles capped off a strong weekend for the Elon University women's track and field team at the 2016 Raleigh Relays as hosted by NC State on Saturday, March 26, at the Paul Derr Track Facility.
"This weekend went really well, went really well," said Elon director of track and field and cross country
Mark Elliston. "I was very impressed by some of our performances this weekend at a big meet. Saw some huge jumps and improvements as well as other things that we need to continue to work on as the season goes along."
Esposito won the 400-meter hurdles as the only runner in the race with a time under a minute with her 58.01 performance. Esposito beat out other notable runners from Duke and Nike while teammate
Lydia Laws was fourth in the event with her time of 1:01.46, now third-best in school history.
Sydney Griffin was fourth overall in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 13.78 and helped the 4x100-meter relay team of herself,
Simone Jackson, Esposito and
Desiree Ross clock a time of 46.86. That performance was eighth overall and the third-best in school history.
Esposito, Ross and Laws later helped the 4x400-meter relay team with
Lauren Brzozowski finish sixth in the event with the time of 3:48.05. That mark sneaks into the program's top-five performance list.
Kimberly Johansen ran a time of 2:14.54 in the 800-meters while
Ellie Bennett was Elon's top finisher in the pole vault with a cleared height of 10' 6" (3.20m).
Jayna Coyle was the Phoenix's top performer in the triple jump with her mark of 36' 6.25" (11.13m).
In the throwing events,
Briana O'Grady had a toss of 147' 9" (45.04m) in the hammer throw.
The Phoenix will compete next at the VertKlasse Meeting at High Point, N.C., on April 1-2.
