Women’s Tennis Welcomes Barton on Thursday

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women's tennis team closes its five-match homestand on Thursday afternoon against Barton College at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Elon is 12-6 overall after finishing 2-1 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center last weekend. The Phoenix defeated North Carolina Central 5-0 and Washington & Lee 6-1 on Saturday to complete the doubleheader sweep. Elon fell 5-2 in a tightly contested match on Sunday against Winthrop.
 
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the second time that Elon and Barton College have faced each other since the Phoenix became a Division I program in 1999-2000. Elon won the first meeting, 7-0, on Feb. 16, 2008 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
 
FINDING THEIR GROOVE
Elon's doubles duo of Olivia Lucas and Erica Braschi have won three straight matches are off to a 10-4 start in dual matches, the best mark of any Phoenix pairing. They earned CAA Women's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week honors for their 3-0 weekend record.

Maria Paraja is tops on the team with 11 singles wins this season, five of which have come at the No. 4 position and four have come at the No. 3 spot. Suzanne Zenoni is the second Phoenix with double-digit singles wins as she owns a 10-6 record. The Phoenix has found success at home this season and hold an 8-1 record at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Elon had its eight-match home winning snapped on Sunday with a narrow loss to Winthrop.
 
SCOUTING BARTON
Barton College, a member of NCAA Division II, are 5-6 overall this season. The Bulldogs are currently on a two-match losing streak after suffering losses to Shaw and Emmanuel (Ga.). Marissa Stevenson leads the team in singles with an 8-3 record and has primarily played at the No. 2 position. Vanessa Sanoja and Dana Kelly each have seven singles sins and No. 3 and No. 6 singles. Lorraine Chon-Qui and Kelly have led the team in doubles action thus far with an 8-3 overall mark this season and No. 3.
 
HEAD COACH ELIZABETH ANDERSON
Elizabeth Anderson is entering her 13th season as head coach of the Phoenix. Anderson earned her first-ever year accolade, after she was named the 2016 CAA Coach of the Year. She has led Elon to five straight seasons of 14 or more wins and guided the program to its first NCAA Tournament in 2014.
 
UP NEXT
The Phoenix heads to Hawaii on Saturday for its Global Experience trip during spring break. They will face the University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine on Wednesday, March 22, at 3 p.m. Hawaii time, which is 9 p.m. eastern time.
