Phoenix Opens 2018 with Doubleheader Sweep

ELON, N.C. –
The Elon University women's tennis team picked up its first two victories of the spring season on Saturday, Jan. 13, defeating North Carolina A&T and North Carolina Wesleyan 7-0 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
 
Highlighting Saturday's sweep was Sofia Edo, who finished a perfect 2-0 in both singles and doubles action. Erica Braschi also had two singles and doubles wins, as she won at the No. 2 and No. 1 positions. The Phoenix has a strong performance in doubles, only dropping three games in six total doubles matches.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
The Phoenix began the day with a victory against North Carolina A&T. Victories on all three doubles courts, highlighted by Braschi and Montana Moore's 6-0 win, which clinched the doubles point and gave Elon a 1-0 lead.
 
Mia Wallace picked up her first collegiate win to start singles with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Braschi picked up the second win on court three before Maria Paraja clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court three to give the Phoenix a 4-0 advantage.
 
Edo won her match in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 on court six, and was followed by Alex Koniaev and Olivia Lucas wins on courts four and one, respectively.
 
Elon clinched the doubles point quickly in the second match of the day with a pair of 6-0 victories on courts three and one. The pairings of Lucas/Koniaev and Wallace/Edo, made quick work of their competition.
 
Paraja started singles with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep on court two and was followed by Koniaev's equivalent sweep at No. 3 to set up Montana Moore for her first singles win as a Phoenix to clinch the match.
 
Rounding out singles matches for the afternoon, Wallace picked up her second win at court six, Braschi completed her perfect afternoon at the No. 1 position, and Edo completed the sweep with a 6-4, 6-1 win on court five.
 
UP NEXT
The Phoenix returns to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Sunday, Jan. 21, to take on reigning Southern Conference champion Furman at 1 p.m.
