THE SERIES
North Carolina has won all four meetings to date. The Tar Heels have been ranked in the Top 5 in the country in each of the four matchups and enter this year's contest continuing that run. Last year in Chapel Hill, UNC defeated Elon 15-5 on March 14. Tuesday marks the second trip to Rudd Field for the Tar Heels after making its first trip on March 15, 2016.
SCOUTING NORTH CAROLINA
The Tar Heels are 4-2 on the year with all four of those wins coming in the last five games after dropping the opener in Harrisonburg, Va., to James Madison in double overtime. Since the loss to JMU, UNC has defeated High Point (14-10), Liberty (23-4), Maryland (16-15 in overtime) and Virginia last time out by the score of 13-9 in Charlottesville. The lone loss was a March 3 setback at home against Florida. The Tar Heels are averaging 15.0 goals per game while allowing 11.7 per outing. Marie McCool's 25 goals leads the way. She also has two assist for a team-high 27 points. McCool has also grabbed 50 draw controls in the team's first six games. In the cage, Elise Hennessey has started five of the team's six games, but Taylor Moreno started last time out and picked up the win at UVA.
LAST TIME OUT
Facing 25th-ranked Stanford, Elon found itself down 5-0 in the opening five minutes and couldn't recover in time in taking a 17-10 loss on March 4. The Phoenix made a second-half, 7-2 run to come within five at 15-10, but the Cardinal put the game away with a pair of late goals.
Stephanie Asher led Elon with four goals and had a career-high seven draw controls, which is one off the program record for most in a single game.
Summer Larese also scored twice to set a new career high.
PACING THE NATION
With 155 career goals,
Stephanie Asher ranks tied for sixth among active players nationally. The senior from Glenelg, Md., has tallied 15 times this year, including five in the season opener against Duke, five on March 1 against High Point and four against Stanford on March 4. She is tied with Darby Kiernan of Colorado for the sixth most in the country and five behind Katie O'Donnell of Penn State for fifth-most.
TEWAARATON WATCH LIST
For the second year in a row,
Stephanie Asher has been named to the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List. Announced Thursday night, March 1, Asher is one of 50 players to initially be named to the list for the prestigious award. On the night of the announcement, Asher tallied a game-high five goals against High Point.
PRESEASON HONORS
Stephanie Asher became the first player in program history to earn Preseason All-America accolades when she was named an Inside Lacrosse honorable mention in early February. The recognition came on the heels of Asher and
Alexis Zadjura being named Preseason All-CAA honorees. Asher has now been a Preseason All-CAA honoree three years in a row and Zadjura was an honorable mention in 2017 before making First Team in 2018.
ADDITIONS ABOUND
After graduating its first four-year class after the 2017 season, Elon welcomed eight new faces to the program for 2018. Of those players, four represent the state of New Jersey (
Quinn Daly,
Meri Curtin,
Taylor Pani and
Claire Smesko), three hail from New York (
Mae McGlynn,
