ELON, N.C. – Looking for a strong start to its Spring Break, Elon University women's lacrosse will head to South Carolina for two games against Winthrop and Coastal Carolina this weekend. First the Phoenix will take on Winthrop in a neutral-site game on Friday, March 16, and Elon will battle Coastal Carolina on Sunday, March 18. Both games are set for 1 p.m. at Coastal Carolina's Brooks Field.
THE SERIES vs. WINTHROP
Elon and Winthrop met for the first time last season when Elon took a 13-5 victory on Feb. 15 at Rudd Field. In the game,
Stephanie Asher and
Abby Godfrey each tallied three times and Elon jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first 30 minutes on the way to the win.
THE SERIES vs. COASTAL CAROLINA
Elon has battled Coastal Carolina each of its first four years of competition and owns a perfect 4-0 mark against the Chanticleers. A year ago when the two met on March 24, 14th-ranked Elon earned a 15-6 win behind four goals from
Stephanie Asher and three from
Nicole Sinacori.
LAST TIME OUT
Elon couldn't get much going against the fifth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels, falling 12-1 in Chapel Hill, N.C. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Rudd Field, but due to inclement weather that left the field unplayable the day before, it was moved to UNC's Finley Field.
Stephanie Asher scored Elon's only goal, but it came after the Tar Heels had built its double-digit lead.
PACING THE NATION
With 156 career goals,
Stephanie Asher ranks tied for sixth among active players nationally. The senior from Glenelg, Md., has tallied 16 times this year, including five in the season opener against Duke, five on March 1 against High Point and four against Stanford on March 4. She is tied with Darby Kiernan of Colorado for the sixth most in the country and five behind Katie O'Donnell of Penn State for fifth-most.
TEWAARATON WATCH LIST
For the second year in a row,
Stephanie Asher has been named to the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List. Announced Thursday night, March 1, Asher is one of 50 players to initially be named to the list for the prestigious award. On the night of the announcement, Asher tallied a game-high five goals against High Point.
PRESEASON HONORS
Stephanie Asher became the first player in program history to earn Preseason All-America accolades when she was named an Inside Lacrosse honorable mention in early February. The recognition came on the heels of Asher and
Alexis Zadjura being named Preseason All-CAA honorees. Asher has now been a Preseason All-CAA honoree three years in a row and Zadjura was an honorable mention in 2017 before making First Team in 2018.
ADDITIONS ABOUND
After graduating its first four-year class after the 2017 season, Elon welcomed eight new faces to the program for 2018. Of those players, four represent the state of New Jersey (
Quinn Daly,
Meri Curtin,
Taylor Pani and
Claire Smesko), three hail from New York (
Mae McGlynn,
Ashley Duggan and
Allie Cerrone) and one from North Carolina (
Lundy Fine).
ELON ON LSN
Elon will have two of its CAA games feature on LAX Sports Network's CAA Game of the Week initiative. First, the Phoenix will visit Hofstra on Friday, April 6, on LSN before coming home to take on Towson on Friday, April 13, on the network. Additionally, the CAA Championship semifinals and finals are set to air on LSN. The 2018 season marks the second year the CAA has partnered with LSN to expand the reach of CAA lacrosse.
2017 TIDBITS
-Three CAA teams, including Elon, went to the NCAA Tournament. It marks the most in one tourney since 2001 when James Madison, Loyola (Md.) and William & Mary all went dancing.
-Two programs - Elon and Colorado - were added prior to the start of the 2014 season. Both teams went to the NCAA Tournament in 2017 in their fourth year of competition. Elon lost to Virginia in the first round and Colorado fell 13-7 to UMass, also in the first round.
-A year ago, Elon posted a program-record 13 wins. It also made its first trip to the CAA title game after beating second-seeded Towson on a
Stephanie Asher goal in overtime. Asher set the new program record for goals scored (58) and points (69).
UP NEXT
Following its two-game weekend, the Phoenix will close Spring Break on March 24 with a home game against Virginia Tech. Opening draw at Rudd Field is set for 1 p.m. and the game will air on Phoenix All-Access.
