RICHMOND, Va. – After leading the team in scoring and rebounding during a 1-1 week last week, Elon University men's basketball freshman forward
Hunter Woods has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday, Dec 9.
Woods put together a strong week, tallying 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per contest, as Elon earned a victory over Kennesaw State before dropping a close one to High Point in overtime. The native of Pasadena, Calif., shot the ball at a 55.0 percent clip over the two games, including 7-of-12 from three-point range.
The freshman began the week by notching a 15 points, four rebounds, one steal and one block to help Elon cruise to a 70-46 victory on Monday, Dec. 2 against Kennesaw State. All 15 of Woods points were scored in the second half to lead the Phoenix to a 44-15 advantage in the final 20 minutes. Woods then put together another strong performance on Thursday, Dec 5, against the Panthers, finishing with a team-high 18 points, nine rebounds and three assists. He scored 12 of his 18 points from beyond the arc, shooting 4-of-9 from three-point range in the contest.
For his play, Woods earned the first CAA Weekly Honor of his career, and is the first Phoenix to earn a weekly award this season.
The Phoenix will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 14, when it plays host to North Carolina Wesleyan at 1:30 p.m. at Schar Center.
