ELON, N.C. – Elon University women's tennis dropped a close midweek contest against Triad rival UNCG, falling 5-2 on Wednesday, April 3, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
 
Elon battled for three hours and 45 minutes against the Spartans as four of the six singles matches went to third sets following doubles action. After UNCG claimed the doubles point, the Spartans took four singles matches and secured the victory with a 4-1 lead after Eugenia Camacho's win on court five.
 
Sofia Edo and Maria Paraja claimed victories in singles action to pick up Elon's lone two points in the match. The Phoenix falls to 10-10 overall with the loss, while UNCG improves to 8-10 on the year with the victory.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
UNCG took the early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. After the Spartans won on court one, Suzanne Zenoni and Olivia Archer produced Elon's response with a 6-3 victory on court three to level the point. Emily Ory and Brianna Gomez would go on to clinch the point for the Spartans with their 6-4 victory on court two.
 
In singles action, Edo got things started with a dominant 6-0, 6-3 victory on court six against Ory to level the match at 1-1. Nancy Bridges would then begin a string of four straight singles wins for the Spartans with her two-set victory on the top court.
 
After Gomez collected a win on court four, Camacho came back from a first-set defeat at the No. 5 position to earn a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 result that clinched UNCG's victory and gave the Spartans a 4-1 advantage. Following UNCG's three-set victory on court three, Paraja responded after a second-set loss to win 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5 against Erika Barquero at the No. 2 position.

The Phoenix returns to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center for two home matches this weekend. Elon will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, April 6, and face South Carolina State at 1 p.m. Then, the Phoenix takes on CAA foe College of Charleston at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 7.
