ELON, N.C. – In our final position preview leading up to Friday's season opener versus Delaware State, we're taking a look at Elon University baseball's battery.
Elon's pitching consists of one graduate student, four seniors (one redshirt), three juniors, four sophomores (two redshirts), and seven true freshmen. The group includes 14 right-handers and five lefties.
The Sunday starter in last year's weekend rotation, junior
Jared Wetherbee will take on the Friday role heading into the 2020 season. The Fiskdale, Mass. native owned a 7-4 record with one save and a 3.00 ERA. He approached the century mark with 98 punch outs in 84.0 innings pitched, reaching double-digit strikeouts three times. The left-hander picked up Co-Pitcher of the Week honors on April 29, was a Second Team All-CAA selection, and was named to the
Preseason All-CAAÂ team last week. Freshman
Spencer Bauer (Manasquan, N.J.) enters his first season as the probable Saturday starter. A two-time Preseason Underclass All-American, he earned Second Team All-Shore honors and helped his high school win a conference title. Bauer was also a five-time Perfect Game All-Tournament Team honoree. Lefty
Dean McCarthy takes over the Sunday role after a strong start in the CAA Tournament game versus UNCW. The junior helped the Phoenix reach its first CAA Championship title game after setting career highs with 6.2 innings pitched and eight strikeouts. The White Plains, N.Y. native went 2-3 on the season with a 3.70 ERA through the lone start and 28 relief appearances. McCarthy tallied 49 strikeouts in 41.1 innings.
