Women's Tennis Set For Trio Of Matches Over The Weekend

ELON, N.C. – Elon University women's tennis returns to action for a trio of matches over the weekend against Gardner-Webb, Campbell and Methodist respectively. Those contests are slated for Friday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 8, at 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

THE SERIES
- Friday marks the 12th matchup between Elon and Gardner-Webb in program history, with Elon leading the overall series 10-1.
- The last time these two programs met, Elon took home a 4-3 victory on March 4, 2019.
- Saturday will be the sixth time Elon and Campbell will meet in a regular season contest. Elon will still be seeking its first win against the Camels, as Campbell leads the all-time series 5-0.
- In the most recent contest, the Camels outlasted the Phoenix, 4-3, on Feb. 28, 2019
- In the second half of Saturday's double-header, Elon will take on Methodist for the second time in program history.
- In its one prior matchup with Methodist, the Phoenix secured a 7-0 victory

ABOUT ELON
- The Phoenix is off to an 4-3 start to the season, after sweeping Presbyterian and Mount Olive, 4-0, and 7-0, in its most recent outings.
- Elon was led by Sofia Edo, who combined with Victoria Saldh to earn a doubles win (6-0) over Mount Olive's Ece Yuksel and Arianna Orozco. In singles play, Edo defeated Mount Olive's Deike Schipper in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) to secure the victory. Against Presbyterian, Edo swept Shelly Ray (6-0, 6-0) to earn Elon a single point. The tandem of Saldh and Edo also picked up a 6-2 victory over Presbyterian's Zeba Jamal and Ella Rowley earlier in the day.
- Elon returned five players from a 2018-19 team that posted a 13-12 dual match record and finished its season falling to top seeded William & Mary 4-3 in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
- The Phoenix is returning 2019 CAA Second-Team Singles selection Olivia Archer as well as 2019 CAA Second-Team Doubles selections Alex KoniaevNicole Shiau and Uma Nayar. In 2019, Archer went 17-4 in singles, while Koniaev combined with Maria Paraja to go 9-8 in No. 1 doubles and Nayar/Shiau finished 11-4 in No. 2 doubles.
- The Phoenix is led by head coach Elizabeth Anderson, who begins her 16th season at the helm for Elon. Anderson currently holds 215 career victories.

SCOUTING GARDNER-WEBB
- Gardner-Webb is in its 14th season under head coach Jim Corn, led the team to a 10-9 record last season.
- Gardner-Webb is off to an 2-1 start to this season defeating Western Carolina, 6-1, in its most recent outing.
- The Runnin' Bulldogs lone loss on the season came at the hands of College of Charleston, 5-2.
 
SCOUTING CAMPBELL
- Campbell is in its first season under head coach Mike Stevens, who spent nine seasons as the head coach at Cornell prior to becoming to head coach of the Camels
- Campbell is off to a 2-1 start to this season after falling to Appalachian State, 6-1, in its most recent contest.
- The Camels two wins this season came in a 7-0 victory over Tennessee State and a 5-2 defeat of Belmont respectively.
 
SCOUTING METHODIST
- Methodist is in the midst of its fifth season under head coach John Blackburn, who led the team to two NCAA tournament appearances in the previous four seasons
- The program is off to an 0-1 start this season after falling to Barton College, 4-3, in its most recent outing.
- Methodist boasts a roster with just four upperclassmen (one senior & three juniors), and a whopping 16 underclassmen (six sophomores & ten freshmen).

UP NEXT
Following a trio of games this weekend, the Phoenix will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 15, to take on Longwood. That matchup is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
