Veronica Day Set To Be Inducted Into Elon Sports Hall Of Fame Nov. 6

Elon University Athletics will be inducting the 50th and 51st classes of the Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, Nov. 6 during Hall of Fame Weekend. The Elon football team will host Villanova at 2:00 p.m. that day in CAA Football action. The induction ceremony, which is free to attend, will take place at 11:00 a.m. in Schar Center.

Elon will induct six members into the Sports Hall of Fame, three from the 2020 class and three more from the 2021 class. They include Veronica Day '11, Aaron Mellette '13 and Chris Thomas '13 from 2020 and Matt Garner '04, Danielle Mills '09 and Tomeka Watson '13 from 2021.

Leading up to Nov. 6, we will highlight each of the inductees, beginning today with Veronica Day.

Day spent four years as a member of the women's track and field program where she was a three-time Southern Conference champion and a nine-time All-SoCon selection in the triple jump and long jump, cementing her place in Elon Track and Field history.

"I'm thankful for the honor of being named an inductee to the Elon Sports Hall of Fame," Day said. "The track was my home away from home for four years because of the wonderful Elon Athletics staff, and because of so many incredibly talented teammates I had the honor of practicing with every day."

The Vienna, Va., native still holds the school record in both the indoor and outdoor long and triple jumps and was named the 2010 SoCon Athlete of the Year for outdoor track and field. She also became the second track and field female to receive the Elon Female Basnight award, while also qualifying for the NCAA East Regional as a senior in 2011.

"A special thanks to Coach Elliston for taking a chance on me as a part of his first recruiting class and for continually raising the bar as future generations of athletes compete for the Phoenix," Day said. "The time I spent at Elon was transformational and paved the way for lifelong success."

As a senior, Day repeated as the SoCon indoor long jump champion in 2011 and took the league's outdoor title in the triple jump. Since graduating from Elon, Day has competed as a member of the United States skeleton team.
