Igaune Represents Native Latvia at Tokyo Olympics

TOKYO – Elon University women's track and field and cross country assistant coach Laura Igaune achieved a dream she has had since high school, competing for her native Latvia as Igaune represented her home country in the hammer throw at the Tokyo Games on Saturday, July 31 inside Olympic Stadium.

Entering the meet ranked 20th in the world in the hammer throw, Igaune would finish at that spot in the qualification round on Saturday with a best throw of 68.53m. Igaune competed in Group B and was ninth in her group.

Being able to represent her country on the Olympic stage comes as the latest athletic achievement for Igaune in her career. The Latvian national record holder in the hammer, she earned the Latvian Junior Championship title in the triple jump and has won multiple titles as the Latvian National Champion in both the discus and hammer.

In 2012, Igaune had qualified for the European Championship and also competed in the hammer at the 2019 IAAF World Athletic Championships in Doha, Qatar. She later earned her Olympic qualifying mark in 2019 after a throw of 71.61m at the Duke Invitational. She would later accomplish her personal-record throw of 73.56m in the hammer at Mount Olive in May of 2019.
