ELON, N.C. – Elon women's lacrosse scored three straight first quarter goals Friday but No. 11 Virginia rebounded with an 8-1 run that spanned the first and second stanzas to defeat the Phoenix 20-11 Friday on Rudd Field. The match was the season opener for both teams.

THE RUNDOWN
- Virginia jumped out to a 2-0 lead on back-to-back free position goals. The Phoenix turned the momentum around with a 3-0 run to take a 3-2 lead with 8:33 left in the opening quarter. The Cavaliers ripped off three straight goals but a free position goal from Bella Feldman ended the first frame with Elon trailing 5-4.
- The Cavaliers opened the second quarter with a 5-0 run to extend its lead to six (10-4) with 7:43 remaining. Consecutive free position scores from Gillian Curran cut the lead to four and gave the senior her first hat trick of the season. Two goals by UVA closed out the half with the Phoenix trailing 12-6.
- Curran added two more goals in the third quarter but the Phoenix were outscored 4-2 and they fell behind 16-8 going into the final quarter.
- The Phoenix continued to show fight in the fourth quarter. Freshman Cierra Hopson recorded her first goal of the season off an assist from Curran. Elon outscored Virginia 2-1 in the final 6:45 but the Phoenix fell to the Cavaliers 20-11.
NOTES AND STATS
- Curran set a career mark for points in a game (6) with five goals on nine shots and assist. She was perfect on three free position shots in the contest.
- Bella Feldmann finished with three goals on seven shots and two ground balls. She went 2-for-2 on free position shots.
- Kailee Follette paced the Phoenix with three ground balls and added one draw control.
- Hopson tallied one goal, one assist and two ground balls in her Phoenix debut.
- Paige Brown made five saves as the starting goalkeeper.
- Virginia won 21 of the 33 draws in the contest and had a 29-22 advantage in shots on goal. Virginia was also 14-of-15 on clear attempts.
- Elon was 12-of-16 on clear attempts and had an identical 11 turnovers to Virginia. The Phoenix scored on 5-of-9 free position shots.
