Women's Tennis Set To Host Campbell And Gardner-Webb This Weekend

ELON, N.C. – Elon University women's tennis continues its spring season this weekend when hosts Campbell and Gardner-Webb in its home openers.
 
The Phoenix is set to take on Campbell at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, before matching up with Gardner-Webb at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13, at Piedmont Indoor Courts in Greensboro, N.C.
 
GAMEDAY COVERAGE
- Saturday's action will begin with doubles play at 1 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
- Sunday's action is set to get underway at 4:30 p.m. with doubles play also at Piedmont Indoor Courts.
- Elon Tennis noise cancelling headphones will also be given out to Elon students in attendance of tomorrows match.
 
THE MATCHUP
- Saturday afternoon marks the eighth meeting between Elon and Campbell.
- The Phoenix currently trails in the all-time series 6-1.
- In the most recent meeting between the two programs, Elon defeated Campbell, 5-2, on Feb. 20, 2021, for the first time in program history.
- Sunday afternoon marks the 14th meeting between Elon and Gardner-Webb.
- The Phoenix currently leads the all-time series, 12-1.
- In the most recent meetings between the programs, Elon defeated Gardner-Webb, 4-3, on Feb. 4, 2021.

SCOUTING ELON
- The Phoenix enters the contest with a 1-2 record after defeating Richmondin its most recent outing.
- Sibel Tanik, Olivia Archer, Lizette Reding and Julie Ball are tied for the team lead in singles wins with one.
- The combination of Julie Ball and Victoria Saldh are leading the way for the Phoenix in doubles play, as the duo has earned the lone doubles victory for Elon this season.
- Elon rounded out last season with a 17-5 overall record and clinched a berth into the CAA Tournament semifinals.
- The Phoenix posted a 12-2 mark in matches played at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and went 4-1 in road contests last season.
- Four All-CAA selections return for the Phoenix in 2021-22 in Sibel Tanik (1st Team), Lizette Reding (Rookie of the Year; 2nd Team Singles; 3rd Team Doubles), Victoria Saldh (3rd Team Singles), and Alison O'Dea (3rd Team Doubles).
- Other returners for the Phoenix include Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sport Excellence Award recipient, Olivia Archer, and junior Shauna Galvin.
- Lizette Reding led the charge for the Phoenix last season, compiling a 16-3 overall record, including a 13-2 mark in the No. 3 slot.
- Sibel Tanik and Victoria Saldh finished tied for second on the team in singles wins with 13 each. Saldh was also tied for the team-lead with 12 doubles victories, while Tanik ended the year on a six-game win streak in singles play.
- Alison O'Dea and Olivia Archer rounded out the double-digit singles wins for the Phoenix in 2020-21, finishing with 10 apiece.
- Shauna Galvin posted an 8-3 overall record in singles play, including a 4-0 mark in the No. 5 slot last season.
- The Phoenix is led by Elizabeth Anderson, who will begin her 18th season at the helm of the program in 2021-22.

SCOUTING CAMPBELL
- Campbell enters the contest with a 2-3 overall record after defeating UNCW, 6-1, in its most recent outing.
- Mike Stevens is in the midst of his third season at the helm of the Campbell program. Stevens guided the Camels to a fifth-place finish in the Big South last season.
- The Camels are led Marissa Pennings, who currently holds a 2-3 overall record, including a 1-0 mark in the No. 1 slot. Mialy Ranaivo has also made contributions for Campbell this season, earning a 2-3 record, including a 1-0 mark in the No. 2 position.
 
SCOUTING GARDNER-WEBB
- Gardner-Webb enters the contest with a 1-1 overall record after falling to Western Carolina, 6-1, in its most recent outing.
- Jim Corn is in the midst of his 16th season at the helm of the Gardner-Webb program. Corn lead the Runnin' Bulldogs to a Big South Tournament Semifinals appearance last season.
- In singles play, the Runnin' Bulldogs are led by Elin Hellberg, who has posted a 2-0 overall record, including a 2-0 mark in the No. 3 slot early on this season.
- In doubles, Teodora Ristic and Maria Jardim head up the Gardner-Webb attack, posting a 2-0 overall record and a 2-0 mark in the No. 2 doubles position.
 
LAST TIME OUT
- Elon defeated Richmond, 4-2, on Friday, Jan. 28, to secure its first win of the season.
- Sibel Tanik led the way for the Phoenix, taking down Emily Dunbar of Richmond, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 in a three-set battle. Tanik earned the victory after outlasting Dunbar 7-2 in the tiebreaker. It was the first singles win of the season for Tanik.
- Sophomore Lizette Reding picked up her first singles victory of 2022, defeating Helene Heiberg 7-6, 6-0 in straight sets on Friday. Reding is now 14-4 in No. 3 singles in her Elon career.
- Julie Ball earned her first victory in an Elon uniform against Richmond, finishing the day with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Polina Shitikova of Richmond.
- Olivia Archer rounded out the singles wins for the Phoenix, taking down Sara Salemyr, 7-6, 7-6 in back-to-back tiebreakers in the first two sets. Archer moved to 1-1 in No. 5 singles this season with the result.
- Richmond won the doubles point with victories on Courts 2 and 3, while Carly Cohen picked up the lone signles win on the day for the Spiders.
 
THE FACES OF 2021-22
- The Phoenix welcomes back six returners from last year's squad in seniors Olivia Archer and Victoria Saldh, juniors Shauna Galvin and Sibel Tanik, and sophomores Lizette Reding and Alison O'Dea.
- Elon will feature two newcomers this season in first-year Sarah Allen and Tennessee transfer Julie Ball.
- Allen joins the Phoenix from Christ Church Episcopal School, where she was a five-time team State Champion from 2016-2020 and earned four top-5 finishes at the All-State Singles Championships in 2017 (5th), 2018 (4th), 2019 (4th) and 2020 (2nd).
- Ball comes to Elon from the University of Tennessee where she earned Spring SEC Academic Honor Roll honors in 2020.
 
COMING SOON
- The Phoenix will continue its homestand next weekend against Georgia State University (Feb. 19) and Presbyterian (Feb. 20) respectively.
- Elon then welcomes North Carolina A&T to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center for a 2 p.m. match on Feb. 22.
- The Phoenix rounds out February on Saturday, Feb. 26, when it hosts Methodist and Pfeiffer in a double-header at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
