Elon, N.C. – Coastal Carolina's Hannah Demis scored late in the first overtime period to lift her women's lacrosse team to a 15-14 win over Elon Sunday on a wet and muddy Rudd Field. The Phoenix showed fortitude in rallying from a three-goal halftime deficit in the non-conference tilt.
Elon falls to 0-4 on the young season with three of the losses coming against ranked opponents. Coastal Carolina improved to 2-1 with the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Elon led 4-3 after one period of play and built a 7-4 advantage on a Cate Mackel goal with 8:13 left in the second period.
- Coastal Carolina, though, took over from there, scoring the final six goals of the half, two each from Lauren Cremen and Demis.
- With some defensive adjustments and strong fundamental play, Elon rallied early in the third. Gillian Curran scored twice and Bella Feldmann added a goal to even the score at 10-10.
- Coastal Carolina scored with just 0.7 seconds left on the clock to take an 11-10 lead into the fourth.
- After the Chanticleers scored with 11:29 left for a 13-11 lead, the Phoenix rallied once again. Hannah McCarthy brough Elon within one on a Margaret Stephan assist and then Cierra Hopson gave Elon the lead on goals with 4:52 and 3:03 to play.
- Coastal Carolina wasted little time tying the contest, posting the final goal of regulation with 2:19 to play.
- In overtime, Coastal Carolina won the initial draw but freshman goalie Chloe Herghelegiu came up with a massive save for Elon.
- The Phoenix had an opportunity for the game-winner but Curran's shot was saved. The Chanticleers took advantage on Demis' game-clincher.
NOTES AND STATS
- The final stats were almost even but Coastal Carolina dominated on draw controls late, winning 7-of-9 in the fourth quarter and overtime for a 19-13 advantage in the contest.
- Elon had the advantage in ground balls with a 19-12 edge.
- Elon had 32 shots, compared to 30 for Coastal Carolina and the two teams each had 24 shots on goal.
- Both teams had 14 turnovers and Elon was 14-of-18 on clear attempts. Coastal Carolina was 10-of-12 on clears.
- Curran led Elon with four goals. In four games this year, she has 14 goals and five assists, scoring at least two times in every match.
- Stephan also had four points with two goals and two assists. She had a team-high seven shots and was perfect on two free position shots.
- Feldmann scored three goals and McCarthy had two goals and an assist for three points.
- Lyndsey Morhardt and Herghelegiu each had three ground balls.
- Julia Dalmass earned a team-best five draw controls.
- Herghelegiu made a season and career-high nine saves.
UP NEXT
- Elon closes out a season-opening five-game homestand Wednesday as the Phoenix hosts Campbell at 7:00 p.m. The Camels are 1-1 on the season but Elon has won the last four meetings between the two programs.
