Elon Falls to Second-Seeded UNC Wilmington In The CAA Tournament

Box Score Washington, D.C. – The seventh-seeded Elon University men's basketball team used an early 16-1 run to build a 36-31 halftime lead, but No. 2 seed UNC Wilmington advanced to the 2022 Jersey Mike's Subs CAA Tournament semifinals. The Seahawks beat the Phoenix 75-58 at the Entertainment and Sports Arena Sunday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Elon led for most of the first half, buoyed by an early 16-1 run that put the Phoenix ahead 18-4
  • Hunter McIntosh scored eight points during the run and Elon made four three-pointers to build the 14-point lead
  • UNC Wilmington chipped away at the deficit and got as close as three at 27-24
  • Chuck Hannah scored on a putback and connected on a three-pointer to give Elon a seven-point lead but UNCW scored on a tip-in at the buzzer to make it 36-31 at the break
  • Elon held the Seahawks to 39 percent shooting in the opening half and both teams had just four turnovers
  • McIntosh was 5-of-6 shooting for a game-high 13 points in the first half. Michael Graham added six points, while Chuck Hannah had five points and four rebounds. Darius Burford had four points, four assists and three rebounds
  • The Seahawks opened the second half with an 10-0 run to take their first lead since the early moments of the first half
  • UNCW built its lead to 10 midway through the second half at 53-43 and then led by as many as 17 at 63-46
  • Elon rallied one last time, scoring seven straight on free throws from McIntosh, a Kris Wooten three-pointer and a Hannah lay-up, forcing UNCW into a timeout with 3:53 to play
  • After two Seahawks' free-throws, Hunter Woods buried a top-of-the-key three-pointer to bring Elon within nine. But UNCW made shots down the stretch to come away with the victory
 
NOTES AND STATS
  • Hunter McIntosh led Elon with 15 points, adding four assists and three rebounds
  • Playing in his final collegiate game, Chuck Hannah ended with nine points and five rebounds
  • Michael Graham also had nine points and five rebounds, blocking two shots as well
  • UNC Wilmington overcame the halftime deficit by shooting 59 percent in the second half
  • Elon made nine three-pointers in the contest and had just nine turnovers. UNC Wilmington, however, had just five turnovers in the contest
