ELON, N.C. – Elon University baseball has its final non-conference game of the season this Tuesday, May 10 as the Phoenix (22-22, 7-10 CAA) hosts North Carolina A&T for a 6 p.m. game at Latham Park.

THE SERIES
- Elon is ahead in the all-time series, 51-10-1.
- The two programs met for a three-game series last year on March 12-14. The first two games were played at War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro, N.C. and the finale was played at Latham Park.
- N.C. A&T edged the Phoenix 8-7 in the opener thanks to a two-RBI walk-off hit.
Willie Havens homered twice in a 2-for-4 outing at the plate. He drove in four runs and scored two more.
Alex Iadisernia went deep once, scored twice and drove in one run with a 3-for-4 performance. On the mound,
Ben Simon fell to 0-2 on the season after giving up two runs on as many hits and a walk. The East Windsor, N.J. native tossed 2.1 innings in relief with three strikeouts.
- A five-run top of the sixth inning highlighted a 10-4 win in Game Two as the maroon and gold evened the series.
Spencer Bauer held the Aggies to two runs on five hits and one walk, adding three strikeouts through the 4.0-inning start.
Ben Sieracki then took over and held the home team scoreless through 3.0 innings of relief. He also recorded three strikeouts and gave up just two hits to earn the win and improve to 1-1.
Anthony Galason and
Garrett Stonehouse both turned in multi-hit outings. Galason went 2-for-4 and added an RBI and a run scored, while Stonehouse hit 2-for-5, drove in two runs and scored another.
- Elon won the rubber match 10-9 thanks to a pair of four-run innings.
Trevor Kirk improved to 1-1 after giving up one hit without issuing a walk in 1.0 inning of relief. The Wake Forest, N.C. native added a pair of strikeouts in the outing.
Joe Sprake picked up his second save of the season, striking out a pair and allowing one hit over 1.1 innings. Iadisernia had a perfect day at the plate, batting 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs, one run and one base on balls.
Griffin Arnone finished 2-for-4, drove in two runs, scored once, walked once and swiped a bag.
SCOUTING THE AGGIES
- N.C. A&T is currently 13-32 overall with a 1-16 mark in the Big South.
- The Aggies hosted a doubleheader against conference foe High Point on Sunday, falling to the Panthers 5-3 and 1-0. The third game in the series started at 3 p.m. on Monday.
- N.C. A&T was picked to finish 10th out of 11 teams in the Big South Preseason Coaches Poll with 31 points.
- Anthony Hennings, who played for Elon during the 2019 and 2020 seasons, is hitting .339 to lead the Aggies at the plate. He also leads the team in hits (60) and doubles (12).
- Xavier Bussey is batting .325, Bret Mersman owns a .294 average and Camden Jackson is next at .290.
- As a team, N.C. A&T is hitting .256 with a .377 slugging percentage and a .338 on-base percentage.
- The Aggies have allowed 351 runs (287 earned) on 468 hits and 238 walks this season. The team has also recorded 352 strikeouts, owns a combined 6.48 ERA, and has a .293 batting average against them.
- Through games on May 8, N.C. A&T ranks 19th in the country with 30 sacrifice bunts. However, the Aggies are 245th in runs scored (230) and 225th in ERA.
- Cort Maynard (.230) ranks 10th in hit by pitch per game (0.46) and 21st in hit by pitch (17). Peyton Winebarger is 15th in games started (12) and Alex Reyna is 29th in sac bunts (8).
ABOUT THE PHOENIX
- After inclement weather forced Saturday's game at Delaware to be canceled, the Phoenix won both games of a doubleheader on Sunday at Bob Hannah Stadium.
- Elon scored five runs in the second inning and held on 5-1 in the first game, then shut out the Blue Hens 4-0 in the second game to complete the sweep.
- The Phoenix is currently seventh in the conference standings and will host the CAA Championship on May 25-29. College Charleston (31-15, 18-3) clinched the regular-season title and the No. 1 seed for the tournament, while James Madison (26-20, 11-6) is currently second. However, the Dukes aren't eligible to compete with JMU leaving for the Sun Belt Conference.
- Elon still has two conference series left on its schedule as the Phoenix will host Towson on May 13-15 and William & Mary on May 19-21.
- Arnone is batting .317 to lead Elon's starters, though Iadisernia is close behind him with a .311 clip.
- Connor Coolahan (.245) has team highs with 27 runs and 29 walks. Iadisernia leads the Phoenix in hits (50), doubles (13) and RBIs (37). Iadisernia is also 14-for-16 on stolen base attempts while Justin Cassella (.185) is 14-for-17.
- Elon is hitting .224 as a team with a .344 slugging percentage and a .338 on-base percentage.
- Ian Evans is expected to get the nod on Tuesday. Elon's pitchers have combined for 359 strikeouts against 107 walks through 390.2 inning and own a 3.96 ERA. Opponents are hitting .274 against them.
- The Phoenix is ranked second nationally in walks allowed per innings (2.47), eighth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.36), 23rd in ERA, 30th in both double plays (38) and double plays per game (0.86), and 33rd in sacrifice bunts (28).
- Shea Sprague is sixth in the country in ERA (1.29) and 19th in WHIP (0.92). Brian Edgington ranks 15th in games started (12), Iadisernia is 15th in sac flies (6) and Carlos Marte is 16th in sac bunts per game (0.21).
SPRAGUE NAMED CAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
- Sprague was named the conference's Co-Rookie of the Week on Monday.
- The true freshman from Hanover, Mass. earned the win in Game Two of Sunday's doubleheader at Delaware to improve to 4-2 on the season. He threw five scoreless innings, scattered four hits, issued one intentional walk and struck out three.
- The outing helped the Phoenix overtake Delaware in the conference standings.
- It was the third weekly honor of the season for Sprague after he was named CAA Co-Pitcher of the Week on April 4 and CAA Co-Rookie of the Week on April 11.
BASEBALL VS. CANCER
- Tomorrow's game marks Elon baseball's Vs. Cancer game.
- Following the game, the team will be auctioning off haircuts with proceeds to benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.
- Additionally, the Phoenix will host a Home Run Derby on Wednesday, May 11 beginning at 7 p.m. at Latham Park. Cost to participate is $5 per person with all proceeds going to the Vs. Cancer campaign.
