Phoenix Concludes Road Swing At Old Dominion Tuesday

ELON, N.C. — The Elon University women's basketball team (2-4) ends its six-game road swing Tuesday when it heads to Old Dominion (4-0) to take on the Monarchs. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. inside Chartway Arena.

THE SERIES   
  • Tuesday will be the second time the two teams have met since series play began last season.
  • Elon hosted Old Dominion last season and earned a 71-68 victory over the Monarchs inside Schar Center. The Phoenix came back from an 11-point deficit and scored the final five points to seal the comeback win on Nov. 22, 2022.
LAST TIME OUT
  • The maroon and gold went 1-1 at the Georgia State Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 22-23 in Atlanta, Ga.
  • Elon fell to Bradley (2-3) 66-59 before securing a win on Thanksgiving Day against tournament host Georgia State 75-68.
  • On Wednesday against the Braves, Iycez Adams led the team on both sides of the court scoring a career-high 18 points while grabbing a team-high nine boards, one shy of her career-high. Adams went 81.8% (9-for-11) from the floor while recording a season-high three blocks.
  • Ajia JamesAva Leroux and Maraja Pass all recorded eight points against Bradley. Pass also tallied a career-high seven assists while James added a season-high two steals.
  • Pass' seven assists and zero turnovers in Wednesday's matchup were a first since Brie Perpignan on February 23, 2022, in Elon's win versus UNCW.
  • In Thursday's victory over Georgia State (3-2) three Phoenix players scored double digits led by Vanessa Taylor with a season-high 15 points. Ajia James matched her season high with 14 points and Jessica Booth also tallied a season-high 12 points.
  • Taylor went 5-for-13 from the field while James went 5-for-9 including four three-pointers from downtown. Booth went 50% from the floor in 28 minutes of play.
  • Maya Johnson paced the Phoenix on the boards grabbing a season-high seven rebounds. Jessica Booth and Vanessa Taylor followed both recording season-highs with six boards apiece.
  • As a team, Elon shot a season-high 46.7% (7-for-15) from beyond the arc against the Panthers.
  • Elon held Georgia State to 13.6% (3-for-22) from three-point range.
  • The Phoenix outrebounded the Panthers 41-37 while outscoring them in the paint 40-36.
  • Elon has forced double-digit turnovers in every game so far this season.
SCOUTING OLD DOMINION
  • Old Dominion is coming off an 11-day break between games after defeating Texas Southern 57-38 on Nov. 17.
  • The Monarchs are 4-0 this season with all games taking place at home in Chartway Arena.
  • Last season, Old Dominion went 22-12 overall and 12-6 in Sun Belt play, finishing fifth in the regular season. The Monarchs fell 70-64 to James Madison in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
  • The Monarchs return five players from last year's squad while welcoming ten newcomers. Kaye Clark and Jordan McLaughlin are the two starting guards back for Old Dominion.
  • Clark is second on the team in points per game with 9.3 behind senior guard En'Dya Buford who is averaging 10.8. Clark also leads the league averaging 3.8 steals per game.
  • Junior Simone Cunningham leads the team averaging 8.0 rebounds per game which also ranks tied for 10th in the league. Additionally, Cunningham is tied for seventh in the league with averaging one blocked shot per game.
  • In the team's matchup against Texas Southern Buford led the team with 10 points while Brenda Fontana led the Monarchs with 11 boards.
  • As a team, ODU shot 35.1% from the floor going 22.7% (5-for-22) from beyond the arc and Went 12-for-18 from the free-throw line.
  • ­The Monarchs are led by four-year head coach Delisha Milton-Jones who joined the team prior to the 2020-21 season. Jones holds a 63-33 record leading the Monarchs. 
EDUCATION DAY IS BACK AGAIN                    
  • The Elon women's basketball team will welcome local elementary school students to campus again this season for a fun-filled Education Day matinee.
  • The game this year will be against Northeastern on Feb. 2, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in Schar Center. This marks the second time that Elon held an Education Day since Jan. 27, 2011.
  • Last year the program welcomed more than 2,400 elementary school students from 10 Alamance-Burlington School System schools as well as Burlington Christian Academy and The Burlington School. Overall, 3,087 fans attended the game, marking the largest crowd in Elon's Division I era. This was also the largest crowd recorded by the conference last season which helped Elon land second in total attendance with 25,859.
