Women’s Tennis Set for Matchup Against No. 34 Charlotte

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women's tennis team (5-2) heads south on Saturday for a matchup against No. 34 Charlotte (7-4). The contest will begin at 2:30 p.m. 
 
COVERAGE 
  • Play begin with doubles at 2:30 p.m. and will continue with singles shortly after.

SERIES HISTORY VS. CHARLOTTE
  • Elon trails the all-time series against Charlotte 9-7. 
  • The Phoenix fell to the 49ers 6-1 in the most recent matchup between the teams on March 5, 2021. 
 
ABOUT THE PHOENIX
  • Elon is coming off a strong season in 2022 in which it went 17-9 and finished as the runner-up at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship.
  • The returnees include graduate Olivia Archer (All-CAA third team in singles); seniors Julie BallShauna Galvin and Sibel Tanik (All-CAA first team in singles and second team in doubles) and junior Lizette Reding (All-CAA second team in singles and doubles). 
  • The Phoenix also welcomes three newcomers in sophomore Miray Konar — a transfer from Western Carolina — and freshmen Madison Cordisco and Helen Sarikulaya. Konar, from Izmir, Turkey, went 7-5 in singles and 10-6 in doubles while playing primarily in the No. 2 spot for the Catamounts last season. A Pittsburgh native, Cordisco was considered a five-star recruit by tennisrecruiting.net. Sarikulaya, from Rockville, Md., was also a five-star recruit and reached as high as No. 7 in the USTA Girls' 18 national standings.
  • Elon is led by Elizabeth Anderson, who is in her 19th season at the helm.

LAST TIME OUT
  • The Phoenix defeated Longwood 7-0 in its first match of the season at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Feb. 15. 
  • Helen Sarikulaya and Miray Konar picked up their second win of the season as a doubles pair, winning 6-1 in the No. 3 position. 
  • Playing their first match of the season together, Julie Ball and Madison Cordisco clinched the doubles point for Elon with a 6-1 victory at the No. 2 spot. 
  • Konar improved to 4-0 on the season in singles with a 6-0, 6-3 playing at No. 6. The sophomore is also 2-0 in doubles this season. 
  • Julie Ball posted a 6-3, 6-3 result in the No. 4 spot to put the Phoenix ahead 3-0. It was the senior's fifth win of the season in straight sets.
  • At the No. 1 spot, Sibel Tanik clinched the match for Elon with a 6-4, 6-2 win. 
  • Lizette Reding battled back from an early hole in the opening set to cruise to a 6-3, 6-2 victory on Court 2. 
  • Olivia Archer and Sarikulaya both bounced back after losing second sets to win match tiebreaks in the Nos. 5 and 3 spots, respectively. 
  • The win was Elon's first by a 7-0 score since the Phoenix defeated UNC Greensboro on April 13, 2022. 
  • This was the second time this season Elon swept singles, as the Phoenix also did so against Campbell on Jan. 20. 
 
ARCHER'S ASCENT 
  • Olivia Archer's singles victory against Longwood on Feb. 15 was the 60th of her career, breaking a tie with Erica Braschi (2014-18) for the second-most career singles wins in Elon's Division I history.
  • Archer needs eight more singles wins to tie Frida Jansaker's (2011-14) all-time Elon record with 68. 
  • After posting 19 singles wins in 2022, tied for the third most in a single season in Elon's Division I history, Archer is off to a 5-2 start in 2023. 
 
TANIK ON A TEAR
  • With Sibel Tanik's victory against Longwood on Feb. 15, the senior is now 20-7 in the last two seasons at the No. 1 singles position.
  • Tanik has a team-high six singles victories this season. The only loss came in a match tiebreak against North Carolina's Fiona Crawley, who is currently No. 1 in the ITA singles rankings. 
  • Dating back to last season, the senior has won 16 of her last 19 completed singles matches, all in the No. 1 spot. 
  • Of Tanik's 20 singles victories the last two seasons, 16 have come in straight sets. 
  • All of Tanik's 27 singles appearances the last two seasons have come in the No. 1 position. 
  • Tanik's has been named CAA Player of the Week twice this season. The first was on Feb. 1 and the most recent on Feb. 14. 
 
WRECKING BALL
  • Julie Ball holds a 5-2 record in singles this season, with all five victories coming in straight sets. 
  • Ball has won six singles sets this season by a 6-0 or 6-1 score, the most on the team. 
  • In three of Elon's seven contests this season, Ball has been the first player to complete her singles match.
  • Since joining Elon last season, Ball holds a 17-7 record in singles and has won 11 of her last 14 matches. 
  • The senior has also won three of her last four appearances in doubles. Two of the wins came with Olivia Archer and the other with Madison Cordisco
 
SARIKULAYA STARRING
  • In Elon's last six contests, freshman Helen Sarikulaya five victories in both doubles and singles. 
  • Three of Sarikulaya's doubles victories this season have come with fellow freshman Madison Cordisco
  • Sarikulaya is 4-0 this season at No. 3 singles. The freshman clinched wins for the Phoenix against Campbell and UNC Greensboro with a victory in the No. 3 position.   
  • Three of Sarikulaya's five singles victories have come in a deciding set. The freshman is 3-0 in final sets this season. 
 
SCOUTING CHARLOTTE
  • The 49ers enter Saturday with a 7-4 record, including a 4-0 mark in home matches. 
  • Charlotte is ranked No. 34 in this week's ITA team rankings, the highest ever ranking for the program. 
  • Among Charlotte's victories this season are Iowa, Utah and Virginia Tech. 
  • Charlotte will face UNC Wilmington on Saturday morning before taking on the Phoenix. 
  • Lucia Quiterio has a team-high six singles wins for the 49ers. Margaux Maquet, Lucie Petruzelova and Kaavya Sawhney all have five wins. 
  • The doubles tandem of Quiterio and Maquet is 5-3 on the season and is ranked No. 55 in this week's ITA doubles rankings. 
  • Charlotte is led by Anthony Davison, who is in his fifth year leading the program. 
 
UP NEXT
Elon kicks off a season-long six-match homestand on Feb. 3 against Middle Tennessee. The Phoenix will also host a doubleheader on Feb. 4 with matches against Methodist at 10 a.m. and Hampton at 2 p.m.
