High Point, N.C. – The Elon University track and field team opened the 2023 outdoor season at High Point's Bill Webb/Bob Davidson Invitational Friday and Saturday. Elon won four events and junior
Grace Dieleman broke the school record in the javelin.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grace Dieleman wasted no time breaking Elon's school record in the javelin. Her first throw of the 2023 season went 146-feet-8 (44.71m) to shatter the previous school record of 142-9 (43.51m) set by Suzanne Martin in 2013.
- In fact, Dieleman's second throw bettered her previous personal best of 132-10 with a mark of 135-7. Two of her other four throws were also over 130 feet.
- Piper Jons won a pair of events, finishing first in the 200 and 400. In the 200, she edged out teammate Reese Webster by .03 seconds with a time of 24.64. In the 400, Jons ran 55.68 seconds.
- Webster, though, won the 100 in 11.83 seconds. She beat teammate Meghan Wilcox, who placed second with a time of 11.97 seconds. Webster's time was wind-aided or it would have been a new school record.
- Kalli'Ana Botelho was dominant in the heptathlon, placing first out of a field of 13 in five of the seven events. She ended with a career-best 4,866 points, second-most in Elon history. Botelho scored 915 points in the 200 with a time of 24.69 seconds and added 897 in the 100 hurdles at 14.59 seconds.
OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
- Chelsea Wallace finished fourth in the shot put at 44-feet-0.75 (13.43m), a distance that ranks seventh in school history.
- Lizzie Lopez scored 3,458 points in the pentathlon, eighth-highest in program history.
- Ja'mia Johnson moved into the top 10 in program history in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.74 seconds.
- Kaitlin McGoogan placed second in the hammer throw at 192-1 (58.55m), less than two feet shy of her personal best. Teammate Lauryn Carlton set a PR at 176-1 (53.68m).
- Alice Roberts set a new personal best in the 1500 at 4:56.55.
UP NEXT
- Elon will compete in NC State's Raleigh Relays beginning Thursday. The Raleigh Relays are one of the largest meets in the country.
