Raleigh, N.C. – The Elon University outdoor track & field team broke three school records Saturday, closing the prestigious Raleigh Relays with a bang.
Piper Jons was involved in all three records, breaking the school record in the 200 and then racing a leg on both the 400 relay and 1600 relay teams that now stand atop Elon's all-time leaderboard.
Meghan Wilcox ran on both relay teams as well.
SHATTERING RECORDS
- Elon broke three school records just a day after Reese Webster broke the school record in the 100, giving the Phoenix four new all-time leaders in just two days.
- The day began with the 400 relay and the team of Meghan Wilcox, Kalli'Ana Botelho, Piper Jons and Webster ran 45.82 seconds to outrace the previous Elon record of 45.91 seconds, set in May of 2016. No other 400 relay team in Elon history has broken the 46-second mark.
- Jons then followed that up with a stunning 200 time of 23.94 seconds to shatter the previous record of 24.23, set by Sydney Griffin in April of 2014. Jons' previous career-best was 24.25 seconds and she broke the 24-second mark Saturday despite running into a headwind of 0.9 m/s.
- The records did not stop there though. Aliya Barrows, Riley Drometer, Wilcox and Jons closed the day by racing to a 3:41.99 in the 1600 relay. That time is more than a full second faster than the 3:43.14 mark that had stood since May of 2019.
OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
- Linn Hertz Saebboe set an outdoor PR in the long jump, leaping 18-feet-5 (5.61m) to move into tied for eighth in program history in the event.
- Anna Twomey ran the 800 in 2:12.75, a time that would rank No. 1 in the CAA entering the weekend. Emily Alps' time of 2:14.46 in the same event was a personal best.
- Riley Drometer had a top-20 finish in the 400 hurdles, finishing in 1:02.56 to place 16th overall.
UP NEXT
- Elon will compete at High Point's VertKlasse Meeting Friday and Saturday to continue the outdoor season.
