Elon Targets More Records At High Point Friday And Saturday

Elon, N.C. – Coming off of a weekend in which the Elon University outdoor track & field team broke four school records, the Phoenix will compete at High Point for the second time in three weeks at the VertKlasse Meeting. Competition begins Friday at 10 a.m. with high jump and will continue into the evening with the 5000 for both the women (4:55 p.m.) and the men (6:00 p.m.), of which Elon's men's cross country team will compete in. On Saturday, the hammer throw and 800 begins at 9:00 a.m. and high performance races will start with the 400 hurdles at 2:55 p.m. Elon's final scheduled event with be the 1600 relay at 5:05 p.m.

WHERE CHAMPIONS RESIDE
Since 2019, Elon's women's cross country/track & field program has won seven CAA Championships. This spring, Elon will look to complete a few three-peats. The Phoenix won both the 2021 and 2022 CAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and will look to make it three in a row. As well, Elon has won both the women's cross country CAA title and the inaugural women's indoor track & field championship. The Phoenix looks to make it a clean sweep during outdoor season. REGIONAL RANKINGS
The USTFCCCA released its first regional rankings of the 2023 outdoor season and Elon is ranked No. 8 out of 48 teams in the Southeast. The Phoenix is the only team in the top 10 of the region that does not compete in either the ACC or the SEC. Duke, Clemson, Kentucky, North Carolina and NC State make up the top five, followed by South Carolina, Virginia, Elon, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. William & Mary is the next highest-ranked CAA team at No. 16 in the Southeast. Delaware is No. 10 in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern is No. 6 in the Northeast.

Elon leads the CAA in six events: Reese Webster in the 100, Anna Twomey in the 1500, Hannah Miller in the steeplechase, the 400 relay team, Kaitlin McGoogan in the hammer throw, and Kalli'Ana Botelho in the heptathlon. In total, Elon ranks among the top ten in the CAA 36 times and among the top 20 another 12 times.

BEASTS OF THE EAST
In order to qualify for the NCAA East Regional Preliminary Round, student-athletes must rank among the top 48 in most events. In the heptathlon, the top 24 student-athletes nationwide automatically advance to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. Currently, Elon ranks among the top 48 in the East nine times, while Kalli'Ana Botelho has a national qualifying heptathlon score.

CAA RECOGNITION
Piper Jons was named CAA Track Athlete of the Week after posting the CAA's fastest time in the 400 and the third-fastest time in the 200. She currently ranks No. 25 in the East Region with her 400 time as well.
 
ELON WINS INAUGURAL INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
For the first time in its history, the Colonial Athletic Association sponsored an indoor track & field championship in 2023. Elon scored 129.83 points to edge out Hampton (121.33) for the crown. Jette Beermann, in the mile, was Elon's lone event winner but the Phoenix flexed its depth, scoring points in all 18 events over the course of two days.
 
LORENZ SET TO ADD TO HER DECORATED CAREER
Redshirt sophomore Leandra Lorenz has already accumulated a career's-worth of awards on the Elon track and field program. She was named the 2022 CAA Women's Track Athlete of the Year and the Most Outstanding Track Performer of the CAA Outdoor Championship after winning both the 1,500 and the 5,000. She qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round as well, running a time of 4:31.62 in the 1,500 prelims.
 
GEORGE RECEIVES RECOGNITION
Madison George recently became the first Elon University student ever selected for the NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program, a collaborative endeavor between the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.K. universities Oxford and Cambridge. This is a highly individualized and accelerated doctoral training program for outstanding students committed to biomedical research careers.
 
George was also recognized by the CAA with the 2021-22 Leadership and Sport Excellence Award, given to one student-athlete in each CAA-sponsored sport who represents the highest standards of teamwork, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship. An engineering major, George maintains a 4.0 GPA and was named a 2022 Goldwater Scholarship recipient. She was also awarded the Elon Lumen Scholarship, awarding her $20,000 to further her research into making the first 3D printed pole vault spikes for women.
 
HE'S OUR COACH
Mark Elliston was named the CAA Women's Coach of the Year for the second straight year and for the fourth time overall in 2022. It was his sixth Coach of the Year accolade over 16 seasons at Elon.
 
ELON ALSO EXCELS ACADEMICALLY
The Elon track & field team was honored as a 2021-22 CAA Academic Excellence Award recipient, which recognizes the team within each sport of the CAA with the highest collective grade point average. Along with that incredible honor, Elon was recognized by The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as an all-academic team. Maria Ahm, Leandra Lorenz and Kaitlin McGoogan were recognized for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25 as well as qualifying for the NCAA East Region Preliminary.
 
GLOBAL IMPACT
Over Thanksgiving Break 2022, the Elon women's track & field and cross country team spent a week in Greece as part of Elon's commitment to diversity and global engagement. The team spent time exploring the country, visiting places like Olympia (the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games) and learning history.
