Men’s Tennis Welcomes UNCG For Senior Night On Tuesday

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men's tennis team (11-8) will honor its three seniors on Tuesday night as it hosts UNC Greensboro (4-19) for a 6 p.m. match at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
 
COVERAGE
  • Elon will celebrate seniors Nicholas Campbell, Nicholas Condos and Luke Queiroz in a ceremony prior to the match. The ceremony will begin at approximately 5:45 p.m.
  • The contest will begin with doubles at 6 p.m. and conclude with singles shortly after.
  • Live scoring for Tuesday night's match can be accessed here.
  • Admission to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center is free. 
  • Updates will be provided during the match by the program's Twitter account, @ElonMTennis. 
 
SERIES HISTORY VS. UNC GREENSBORO
  • The Phoenix is 13-9 all-time against UNC Greensboro and has won the last six meetings between the teams. 
  • Elon won its most recent match against the Spartans 4-2 on April 14, 2022, in Greensboro. 
  • The Phoenix has won its last four home matches against the Spartans. 
 
ABOUT THE PHOENIX
  • Elon is coming off a strong spring in which it went 15-9 and finished as the runner-up at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship.
  • Among the returnees is Nicholas Campbell, the Most Outstanding Player at the CAA Tournament and an All-CAA second-team singles selection.
  • Others include senior Nicholas Condos; juniors Daniel Martin (All-CAA second team in singles and doubles), Luke Queiroz and Ben Zipay; and sophomore Esteban Penagos.
  • The Phoenix welcomes three freshmen in Oskar AntinheimoVeljko Krstic and Jake Pettingell. Antinheimo, from Helsinki, earned a UTR rating of 12 and has been ranked as high as No. 483 in the ITF Junior Rankings in singles play. A native of Belgrade, Serbia, Krstic has been ranked as high as No. 175 in the ITF Junior Rankings in both singles and doubles. Pettingell, from Sarasota, Fla., achieved a top USTA ranking of No. 22 in the state of Florida. Elon also adds Ahmed Hosni for the spring season. A native of Cairo, Egypt, Hosni has been ranked as high as No. 197 in the ITF Junior Rankings and reached two ITF Junior singles finals in 2022.  
  • Elon is led by head coach Michael Leonard, who is in his 19th season at the helm.

LAST TIME OUT
  • Elon lost 5-2 at Charlotte on April 7, as a comeback attempt in singles fell just short. 
  • Making his second career doubles appearance, freshman Jake Pettingell paired with Daniel Martin for the first time at the No. 3 spot. The first-time duo fell 6-4. 
  • Nicholas Condos and Ben Zipay delivered a 6-3 victory on Court 2 to split the first two completed doubles contests. This was the pair's second victory of the season playing the No. 2 position and their team-best 11th win. 
  • Charlotte clinched doubles with a 7-5 comeback win at the No. 1 spot. 
  • The 49ers won the first two completed singles matches to go ahead 3-0. 
  • Martin posted Elon's first victory of the day with a 6-4, 6-4 result on Court 1 against Charlotte's Abhi Vannemreddy. The win was Martin's 13th of the season at the No. 1 position, tying him with Veljko Krstic for the most singles wins on the team.
  • Freshman Oskar Antinheimo snapped his three-match skid with a hard-fought 7-6 (7), 7-5 victory on Court 4. It was his first career victory at the No. 4 spot, as he had lost his first three matches playing No. 4. 
  • After dropping the first set, Condos came from a break down in the second to win it 7-5 and keep Elon's hopes alive. With both Condos and Krstic in a final set, Elon needed both wins to complete the come-from-behind effort. However, Krstic lost a tight final set as Charlotte clinched the match, and Condos fell in a tiebreak shortly after.
  • With the loss, the Phoenix is now 3-6 on the season away from home. Elon is also 0-4 in matches played indoors. 
 
SENIOR SPOTLIGHT – NICHOLAS CAMPBELL
  • Entering Tuesday, Campbell has 34 singles and 25 doubles victories at Elon. 
  • Campbell was named Elon's 2022 Team MVP after delivering 14 singles and 10 doubles wins. 
  • The Larnaca, Cyprus, native was named Most Outstanding Player honors for his performance at the 2022 CAA Tournament. He was also selected as 2022 All-CAA Second Team in singles. 
  • Campbell will graduate Elon with a degree in computer science. 
  • From head coach Michael Leonard: "Nico has been instrumental to the success of our program over the past three seasons. Nico has had tons of success on the court but what he does off the court is what separates him. He has been a captain for the past two seasons and someone that all his teammates look up to and go to for support. I have no doubt that Nico will be successful in his future endeavors."
 
SENIOR SPOTLIGHT – NICHOLAS CONDOS
  • Condos has 40 doubles and 24 singles victories in his career entering Tuesday's match.  
  • The Wilton, Conn., native has earned three CAA weekly honors in his career. Along with partner Ben Zipay, he has earned two CAA Doubles Team of the Week honors this season. He was also selected CAA Player of the Week on April 28, 2021. 
  • Condos led the team in singles victories during the 2020 season. 
  • Condos will graduate Elon with a degree in psychology. He also completed minors in sport management and business finance.
  • From head coach Michael Leonard: "Nick without a doubt has been one of our strongest doubles players throughout his time at Elon. Nick has always had tremendous talent but to see him strengthen his mental makeup over this past season has been a joy to watch. I look forward to seeing him to continue to grow and become all that he can be."
 
SENIOR SPOTLIGHT – LUKE QUEIROZ 
  • Queiroz enters Tuesday with a 2-1 career record in singles and 6-1 career mark in doubles. 
  • The Ridgefield, Conn., native is 2-0 in doubles this season, which includes a win with Veljko Krstic in Elon's victory against Hampton on March 4. 
  • Queiroz will graduate Elon with a degree in music production and recording arts. 
  • From head coach Michael Leonard: "Luke's passion is evident by how he supports his teammates whether he is on the court or cheering from the outside. It takes a special person to not always be in the lineup but still care about the success of the team which Luke did admirable. I cannot wait to see how he uses that passion in his next journey in life."
 
KRSTIC ELEVATING
  • Freshman Veljko Krstic has won eight of his last nine singles matches and is tied with Daniel Martin for a team-best 13 victories this season. 
  • All 13 of Krstic's singles wins this season have come at the No. 3 position. Seven of his last eight wins have come in straight sets. 
  • The Belgrade, Serbia, native is 3-1 in final sets this season. Two of the wins came in match tiebreaks while the other came in a full third set. 
  • Krstic is also 5-4 in doubles this season with three different partners. He is 4-3 with fellow freshman Oskar Antinheimo.

DAN THE MAN
  • Daniel Martin's 13 singles wins this season are tied with freshman Veljko Krstic for the most on the team. He also has eight doubles victories.
  • Martin has won 30 singles matches since the start of last season, the most of any Elon player in that span. 
  • His win against Charlotte on April 7 was his 13th at the No. 1 position since joining the Phoenix, as his previous 17 victories came in the Nos. 2, 3 and 5 spots.
  • The junior is 30-9 in his singles career at Elon, with 23 of the 30 victories coming in straight sets. 
  • After earning a singles victory in the No. 1 spot against No. 35 North Carolina State on Feb. 26, Daniel Martin was selected as the CAA's Player of the Week on Feb. 28. 
  • It was Martin's second CAA weekly honor of the season, as he also won Co-Doubles Team of the Week with partner Oskar Antinheimo on Jan. 25.

VERSATILE ZIPAY
  • Junior Ben Zipay holds a 19-6 record across doubles and singles this season. 
  • Zipay is 9-3 in singles, with a 2-0 mark at No. 5 and a 7-3 record at No. 6.
  • Eight of Zipay's nine singles victories this season have come in straight sets. 
  • The Osprey, Fla., native is also 10-2 in doubles with partner Nicholas Condos. The tandem has been tabbed as the CAA's Doubles Team of the Week on two occasions. 
  • Zipay has the best winning percentage in both singles and doubles for anyone on the team that has made more than two appearances.   

DOUBLES SUCCESS
  • The Phoenix has won the doubles point in seven of its last nine matches. Elon is 28-18 in completed doubles matches this season.
  • Three Elon doubles teams have combined to win four CAA weekly honors this season. 
  • Oskar Antinheimo and Veljko Krstic took home Doubles Team of the Week on March 28, becoming the third different Elon team to win the award. The freshmen are 4-3 together on the season. 
  • Nicholas Condos and Ben Zipay have taken home Doubles Team of the Week on Feb. 8 and Feb. 21. The duo is 11-2 playing Nos. 2 and 3 doubles.
  • Daniel Martin and Oskar Antinhiemo also won Co-Doubles Team of the Week on Jan. 25
  • Antinheimo and Martin also cracked the ITA's Top 60 Doubles Rankings on Feb. 8, checking it at No. 55. They are the first Elon team to feature in the ranking since 2017.
  • The duo of Martin and Nicholas Campbell is 5-3 at the No. 1 spot in Elon's last nine matches. Martin is 8-6 on the season at No. 1 with Antinheimo and Campbell. 

FRESHMAN PRODUCTION
  • Freshmen Oskar AntinheimoAhmed Hosni and Veljko Krstic have combined for 29 singles and 11 doubles wins this season. 
  • Of Elon's 44 victories in Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles this season, 29 were registered by freshmen. 29 of the Phoenix's 67 total singles wins have been delivered by freshmen. 
  • Antinheimo is 11-6 on the season playing Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles, and his 11 singles victories this season are the third most on the team. He has seven set wins in singles by 6-0 or 6-1 scores, one behind Daniel Martin for the most on the team. 
  • The Helsinki, Finland, native has already won three weekly CAA honors – CAA Co-Doubles Team of the Week on Jan. 25, CAA Player of the Week on Feb. 14 and CAA Doubles Team of the Week on March 28. 
  • Krstic has won 11 of his last 13 matches in the Nos. 2 and 3 positions and is 13-4 on the season. He won his first career CAA weekly honor on March 28 when he took home Doubles Team of the Week with Antinheimo. 

IT'S GOOD TO BE HOME
  • Elon is 8-1 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center this season. The Phoenix is 8-2 in home contests, as the team lost its only match this season at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center. 
  • Elon's win against Dartmouth on March 21 secured an 11th straight season with a winning home record. The last time the Phoenix did not finish with a winning home record was 2012. 
  • Since the start of the 2013 season, Elon is 96-23 in home matches. 

SCOUTING UNC GREENSBORO
  • The Spartans enter Tuesday night's match with a 4-19 record on the season. 
  • UNC Greensboro has lost 10 matches in a row and is 1-11 away from home. 
  • In their last outing on April 8 against Davidson, the Spartans lost 6-1. 
  • UNC Greensboro's only road win came against Washington and Lee on March 7. 
  • The Spartans have not won a match since they defeated Guilford on March 11. 
  • UNC Greensboro is 35-100 in completed singles contests on the season. 
  • Jeff Trivette is in his 21st season as UNC Greensboro's head coach. 

UP NEXT
Elon will play its final road match of the regular season on April 14 against Radford. The contest will start at 2 p.m.
