WHERE CHAMPIONS RESIDE
The Elon track & field team won its third consecutive CAA outdoor championship a week ago, posting the largest margin of victory at the meet in 20 years. The victory was the program's eighth conference title in women's cross country/track & field since 2019. Elon won the inaugural CAA Indoor Track & Field championship this past winter and has won four straight women's cross country crowns to go with three straight outdoor track & field titles. In fact, Elon has won every CAA championship held in those sports since the fall of 2019.

CAA RECOGNITION
Kaitlin McGoogan was named the CAA Field Athlete of the Week this past week after breaking Elon's school record in the hammer throw, becoming the first female in the CAA to break 200 feet in two years.
Piper Jons was named CAA Track Athlete of the Week on March 21 after posting the CAA's then-fastest time in the 400 and then-third-fastest time in the 200.
ELON WINS INAUGURAL INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
For the first time in its history, the Colonial Athletic Association sponsored an indoor track & field championship in 2023. Elon scored 129.83 points to edge out Hampton (121.33) for the crown.
Jette Beermann, in the mile, was Elon's lone event winner but the Phoenix flexed its depth, scoring points in all 18 events over the course of two days.
LORENZ SET TO ADD TO HER DECORATED CAREER
Redshirt sophomore
Leandra Lorenz has already accumulated a career's-worth of awards on the Elon track and field program. She was named the 2022 CAA Women's Track Athlete of the Year and the Most Outstanding Track Performer of the CAA Outdoor Championship after winning both the 1,500 and the 5,000. She qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round as well, running a time of 4:31.62 in the 1,500 prelims.
Lorenz once again won the 1,500 and the 5,000 in 2023, repeating as the conference champion in both events.
GEORGE RECEIVES RECOGNITIONS
Pole vaulter
Madison George has been named the 2022-23 CAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. An engineering major with a biomedical concentration, George maintains a 4.0 grade point average. She has been heavily involved in research projects and won the Elon Lumen prize, which awarded her $20,000 to further her research into making the first 3D printed pole vault spikes for women. George was a 2022 Goldwater Scholarship recipient and has earned induction to the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Pi Mu Epsilon Honor Society and Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society.
Earlier this year, George became the first Elon University student ever selected for the NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program, a collaborative endeavor between the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.K. universities Oxford and Cambridge. This is a highly individualized and accelerated doctoral training program for outstanding students committed to biomedical research careers.
George plans to pursue a PhD in bioengineering at Stanford University.
HE'S OUR COACH
Mark Elliston was named the CAA Women's Coach of the Year for the second straight year and for the fourth time overall in 2022. He followed that up by being named CAA Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year for the inaugural CAA indoor season in the spring of 2023. It was his seventh Coach of the Year accolade over 17 seasons at Elon.
ELON ALSO EXCELS ACADEMICALLY
The Elon track & field team was honored as a 2021-22 CAA Academic Excellence Award recipient, which recognizes the team within each sport of the CAA with the highest collective grade point average. Along with that incredible honor, Elon was recognized by The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as an all-academic team.
Maria Ahm,
Leandra Lorenz and
Kaitlin McGoogan were recognized for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25 as well as qualifying for the NCAA East Region Preliminary.
GLOBAL IMPACT
Over Thanksgiving Break 2022, the Elon women's track & field and cross country team spent a week in Greece as part of Elon's commitment to diversity and global engagement. The team spent time exploring the country, visiting places like Olympia (the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games) and learning history.
