ELON, N.C. – After tying for fourth place at the PGA Professional Championship on Wednesday, John Somers '14 has earned a spot in the PGA Championship later this month.
The PGA Professional Championship is a tournament for golf club professionals and teachers who are members of the Professional Golfers' Association of America. The top-20 finishers each year earn a spot into the PGA Championship, the second major on the professional golf calendar. The tournament was contested at the Twin Warriors and Santa Ana Golf Clubs in Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico.
Somers, who currently serves as the head golf professional at the Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brooksville, Florida, posted a 72-hole score of 282 to finish at 6-under par. He held a 54-hole lead after consecutive scores of 68 in the second and third rounds. Somers won Elon's Team MVP award for men's golf in 2013 and 2014
The 2023 PGA Championship will be contested at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York, on May 18-21.
