Women’s Basketball Opens CAA Play At North Carolina A&T, William & Mary

ELON, N.C. — The Elon women's basketball team (6-5) kicks off CAA play this weekend with a pair of road matchups. The Phoenix will face North Carolina A&T (4-7) on Friday at 7 p.m. in Corbett Sports Center and will take on William & Mary (3-8) on Sunday at 1 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY
  • Elon leads the all-time series over N.C. A&T 14-11 but dropped both matchups last season.
  •  The Aggies hold a 7-4 advantage when hosting the Phoenix at Corbett Sports Center.
  • Elon and William & Mary are tied in the all-time series at 12-12.
  • The Phoenix has lost the last four meetings with the Tribe, including a 73-61 setback on Feb. 23, 2024.
LAST TIME OUT
  • Elon capped off its nonconference schedule with a dominant 97-53 victory over Lees-McRae on New Year's Eve.
  • Raven Preston led the way with 14 points and nine rebounds, also adding two steals and an assist.
  • Three additional Phoenix players scored in double figures: Laila Anderson, Jayda Angel, and Kamryn Doty each with 11 points.
  • Angel led the team defensively with three steals, while Samira Khalil dished out a season-best five assists.

JAYDA'S ANGELS
  • Freshman Jayda Angel has earned three CAA Rookie of the Week honors so far in the 2024-25 season.
  • Angel reached double figures for the fifth time this season, scoring 11 points and leading the Phoenix defensively with three steals in the win over Lees-McRae.
  • Angel delivered an impressive performance in the team's win at Long Beach State, scoring nine points—including the game-winning basket—and contributing eight rebounds.
  • Angel tallied 12 points shooting 4-for-9 from the field while also adding nine rebounds, two assists and a steal in the team's win over Longwood.
  • Angel notched her first career 20-point performance against Elon's first Power Four matchup of the season.
  • She led all Phoenix scorers with 20 points, shooting 7-for-13 from the field, and added six rebounds and two steals, tying for the team lead in both categories, during the game against Virginia Tech.
  • She made a strong impression in her first two collegiate games, leading the Phoenix in scoring in victories over High Point and Gardner-Webb.
  • Angel averaged 17.5 points in her first collegiate week.
  • She nearly reached a double-double against the Bulldogs with seven rebounds and 17 points.
PRESEASON PRAISE
  • The Phoenix was picked to finish seventh in the CAA Preseason Poll.
  • Senior forward Iycez Adams was selected to the Preseason All-CAA Second Team while redshirt sophomore guard Raven Preston earned Preseason All-CAA Honorable Mention honors.
  • Adams averaged a team-best 10.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game last season.
  • She tied for second in the league last season in blocks per game and was third in the conference in total blocked shots (49).
  • The Greensboro, N.C. native recorded five double-double performances last year, including three straight from Jan. 14-21, 2024. 
  • Raven Preston returns to play this season for the Phoenix after missing last season due to injury. Preston became the first CAA Rookie of the Year in Elon program history after averaging 11.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.
  • The two will play together for the Phoenix for the first time since playing with each other in 2020-21 at Quality Education Academy.
SCOUTING NORTH CAROLINA A&T
  • N.C. A&T enters the matchup with a 4-7 record, coming off a commanding 100-42 victory over Mount Olive on Dec. 31, 2024.
  • The Aggies finished last season 22-12 overall and 13-5 in the CAA, placing fourth in the league standings.
  • This year, N.C. A&T was picked to win the CAA, receiving 11 of 14 first-place votes in the 2024-25 CAA Preseason Poll.
  • Maleia Bracone and Jordyn Dorsey earned All-CAA Preseason First Team honors, while Chaniya Clark was named to the Second Team.
  • Dorsey leads the Aggies in scoring, ranking fourth in the CAA with 15.4 points per game, and also leads the team in assists (37) and steals (19).
  • Paris Locke averages 10.5 points per game and tops the team in rebounds, pulling down 6.4 per contest.
  • Head coach Tarrell Robinson is in his 13th season at the helm of the Aggies program.
SCOUTING WILLIAM & MARY
  • William & Mary holds a 3-8 record, most recently falling to No. 8 Maryland 107-57 on Dec. 19, 2024. The Tribe begins their CAA schedule against Hampton on Friday, Jan. 3, before hosting Elon.
  • The Tribe went 15-14 overall and 12-6 in CAA play last season, finishing fifth in the conference.
  • William & Mary was predicted to finish tied for fourth in the 2024-25 CAA Preseason Poll.
  • Bella Nascimento earned All-CAA Preseason Second Team honors, while Cassidy Geddes was named to the Preseason Honorable Mention List.
  • Nascimento leads the Tribe offensively, ranking eighth in the CAA with 12.9 points per game.
  • Natalie Fox averages a team-high 6.3 rebounds per contest, and Monet Dance paces the team with 23 assists.
  • Erin Dickerson Davis is in her third year as the head coach of the William & Mary program.
