Elon Renews Series With Appalachian State

Former SoCon Rivals To Clash For First Time Since 2014

ELON – The Elon men's basketball team is back on the road Monday night when it travels to Boone for a 6:30 p.m. ET tipoff against Appalachian State at the Holmes Convocation Center.

The two former Southern Conference rivals will meet for the first time since both departed the league – Elon to the Coastal Athletic Association and App State to the Sun Belt – in 2014. Monday's nonconference contest will be televised on ESPN+.

GAME INFORMATION
INSIDE THE MATCHUP – ELON vs. APPALACHIAN STATE
  • Series record: Appalachian State leads 52-45
  • Elon won its final three games against App State in SoCon play between the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.
  • App State (4-2) has won two in a row at Dartmouth (85-77) and against Charlotte at home (65-63).
  • The Mountaineers are limiting opponents to 66.2 points per game – Elon averages 89.4 PPG offensively – and are a top-40 squad nationally in turnovers per game (9.7, 37th).

STARTING FIVE
1. Bucket Getter
Graduate forward and first-year Phoenix Chandler Cuthrell has been an imposing offensive force, ranking second in the CAA and 15th nationally at 22.6 points per game through five outings. He earned CAA Player of the Week honors on Monday after delivering back-to-back career highs of 28 and 29 points against Marshall and Gardner-Webb. Though he was held to 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting in Thursday's road loss at Miami, Cuthrell is shooting 52.8% from the floor overall and has four 20-point games, including a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double in an overtime win at UNCG on Nov. 8.

2. Sharing Is Caring
The Phoenix continues to share the ball at a superb rate, averaging 16.8 assists per game and leading the CAA with a 1.58 assist-to-turnover ratio. Elon has recorded at least 15 assists in all five games, including a pair of season-high 18-assist outings. Guards DeMarco Johnson and Ja'Juan Carr rank second and fifth in the league in individual assist-to-turnover ratio at 4.20 and 2.75, respectively. Three Phoenix — Carr (4.4 APG), Johnson (4.2) and Kacper Klaczek (3.4) — are averaging more than three assists per game; no other CAA team has more than two players above that mark.

3. Double Trouble
Kacper Klaczek, Cuthrell's frontcourt partner and fellow graduate forward, has been equally impactful through his first five games in Maroon and Gold. The Polish native is one of just five players in Division I averaging at least 11.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.0 blocks per game. He'll look to regain his offensive rhythm after three straight single-digit scoring outings since his career performance of 25 points and 13 rebounds in Elon's overtime win at UNCG on Nov. 12.

4. Let It Fly
The Phoenix has been both prolific and efficient from beyond the arc, entering Monday's matchup at Appalachian State as the CAA leader in 3-point makes (12.2), attempts (31.4) and percentage (38.9%). Junior guard Randall Pettus II has fueled that surge, emerging as a bona fide sharpshooter by hitting 50% (18-of-36) from deep with multiple threes in every game. He is one of only eight players in Division I shooting 50% or better from long range on at least 36 attempts.

Elon has hit double-digit threes in all five contests – its first such stretch since a six-game run late in the 2020-21 season (Feb. 8–29) – including a 10-of-21 (47.6%) performance at Miami on Thursday. All eight Phoenix who have made a 3-pointer this season have knocked down at least two.

5. Bench Boost
Sophomore Bryson Cokley has quickly become a valuable scoring spark off the bench. The George Mason transfer – who originally committed to Wake Forest out of high school – is averaging 11.8 points in 23.0 minutes per game and has scored in double figures in four of five outings. He has twice posted a career-high 14 points, most recently at Miami on Thursday, where he shot 6-of-7 from the floor and added a career-best six rebounds.

UP NEXT
Elon will return from the Thanksgiving break to host Mercer on Saturday, Nov. 29. Tipoff at the Schar Center is at 4 p.m. ET.
