Elon, N.C. –
Mikayla Jones,
Madison Synowiec and
Katie Blount ran the three fastest 5,000m races in program history Saturday night as the Elon University indoor track & field team closed a strong weekend. Elon competed at Liberty's Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational Friday and Saturday, while the distance runners competed at Boston's David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
Just two weeks from the CAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, the trio posted three of the four fastest times in the conference this year. Jones broke her own school record by almost 17 seconds with a time of 16:07.51. Synowiec followed in 16:19.89 and Blount added a time of 16:22.15. All three of them surpassed the previous school record of 16:24.07.
INTO THE TOP TEN
- Mikayla Jones broke her own school record in the 5,000m with a time of 16:07.51 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston. That time broke her own school record, set earlier this year, by almost 17 seconds. Her time is almost 28 seconds faster than any other runner in program history and ranks among the top 50 in the country entering the weekend.
- Jones wasn't the only one who posted a tremendous time in the 5,000m. Madison Synowiec ran the race in 16:19.89, which would have broken the school record if not for Jones' race. And Katie Blount posted a time of 16:22.15, another mark that would have broken the school record prior to Saturday evening.
- Shayla Cann posted a personal best time of 2:11.82 in the 800 invite at the Darius Dixon Memorial, fourth-best in program history.
- Lizzie Lopez jumped 18-feet-8 (5.69m) for a new PR and the seventh-best performance in school history.
- In Boston, Sarah Petitjean ran the mile in 4:53.61. That time is a new personal best and seventh in program history.
- Duna Viñals ran the 400 in 57.12 seconds to rank No. 10 in school history.
- The 1600 relay team of Viñals, Gabbi Walker, Meghan Wilcox and Cann put together a season-best time of 3:53.32. That time gets the unit into the record book at No. 10 in program history.
OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
- Meghan Wilcox ran season best times in the 60 (7.67) and the 200 (25.09).
- Gabi Walker set a new PR in the 800 at 2:15.74.
